ON SAFARI.

ANNOUNCEMENTS-Continued

Big Game Hunting in British East Africa, with Studies in Bird Life. By ABEL CHAPMAN, F.Z.S., Author of "Wild Norway," "Bird Life on the Borders," 'Wild Spain," etc. With about 200 Illustrations by the Author and E. CALDWELL. 8vo. [Shortly The author of this book is a well-known ornithologist, as well as a mighty hunter and traveler. He takes us "on safari" (i. e. on trek) through a new African region-a creation of yesterday Imperially speaking, since British East Africa only sprang into existence during the current decade on the opening of the Uganda Railway. "The New Colony," he says, "six times greater in area than the Mother Land, is an Imperial asset of as yet unmeasured possibilities, consisting, to-day, largely of virgin hunting grounds, unsurpassed on earth for the variety of their wild fauna, yet all but unknown save to a handful of pioneers and big-game hunters."

ANGLING AND ART IN SCOTLAND.

Some Fishing Experiences Related and Il

With 32 Colored Plates and other Illustrations. [In the Press "Although this book is entitled 'Angling and Art in Scotland' it must not be thought that it is in any way a treatise upon painting. A parallel is drawn between the art of the Angler and that of the landscape painter which is, to my mind, very real and ever-present; but there as far as the writing of the book goes, the matter ends; for I have devoted my space to the narration of certain angling experiences and descriptions of scenery which, I hope, may be of interest not only to the angler but to the general reader, and have left my pictures to speak for themselves as illustrative of the kindred art of landscape painting."-Preface.

It is the general student and lover of painting," he continues, "whom I have wished to interest." Besides its stimulating artistic criticism, the book is full of interesting glimpses of Eastern history and thought, in so far as they have affected art, as well as biographical sketches of Eastern painters.

The author of this book, who speaks, as it were, ex cathedra, has here collected a series of eight lectures on architecture delivered in the Royal Academy. In them he has endeavored to establish a standpoint from which architecture should be studied and practiced. The first four lectures deal with the study of architecture-its relation to personal temperament, its appeal to the emotions and its limitations. In the last four devoted to "The Grand Manner," the writer has illustrated his conception of the aims and ideas of architecture by reference to great examples of the art in the past. This book is the outcome of twenty years' work. In it is put forth a theory of the Origin of Verte brates, which is based upon two fundamental propositions, (1) that the essential factor for the upward evolution of all animals is growth of brain power. (a) that each higher group of animals has arisen from some member of the highest group evolved up to that time and not from a lower group.

All the evidence, whether anatomical, physiological, or paleontological, points to the conclusion that the vertebrates arose from the highest invertebrate group-the anthropods-which were the dominant race at the time when vertebrates first appeared.

Every recipe given has been tested to ensure accuracy, and the simplest language is used in explaining what has to be done.
