20 shudder. But wilt thou know, O vain man, that faith apart 21 from works is barren? Was not Abraham our father justified by works, in that he offered up Isaac his son upon 22 the altar? 1Thou seest that faith wrought with his works, and by works was faith made 23 perfect; and the scripture was fulfilled which saith, And Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned unto him for righteousness; and he was 24 called the friend of God. Ye see that by works a man is justified, and not only by faith. 25 And in like manner was not also Rahab the harlot justified by works, in that she received the messengers, and sent them 26 out another way? For as the body apart from the spirit is dead, even so faith apart from works is dead.

And the 6 tongue is a fire: 5 the world of iniquity among our members is the tongue, which defileth the whole body, and setteth on fire the wheel of nature, and is set on fire by hell. For 7 every kind of beasts and birds, of creeping things and things in the sea, is tamed, and hath been tamed by mankind: but the tongue can no man 8 tame; it is a restless evil, it is full of deadly poison. Whence come wars and whence come fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your pleasures that 2 war in your members? Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and 5 covet, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war; ye have not, 3 because ye ask not. Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may spend 4 it in your pleasures. Ye adulteresses, know ye not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? Whosoever therefore would be a friend of the world maketh himself an enemy of God. 5 Or think ye that the scripture 6 speaketh in vain? Doth the spirit which he made to dwell in us long unto envying? 6 But he giveth more grace. Wherefore the scripture saith, God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace to the humble. 7 Be subject therefore unto God; but resist the devil, and he 8 will flee from you. Speak not one against 11 another, brethren. He that speaketh against a brother, or judgeth his brother, speaketh against the law, and judgeth the law: but if thou judgest the law, thou art not a doer of the law, but a judge. One only is the lawgiver and 12 judge, even he who is able to save and to destroy: but who art thou that judgest thy neighbour?

For ye are a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. 10 For that ye ought to say, If 15 the Lord will, we shall both live, and do this or that. But now ye glory in your 16 vauntings: all such glorying is evil. To him therefore 17 that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin.

THE FIRST EPISTLE GENERAL OF

PETER.

PETER, an apostle of Jesus | and honour at the revelation Christ, to the elect who are of Jesus Christ: whom not 8 sojourners of the Dispersion having seen ye love; on whom, in Pontus, Galatia, Cappado- though now ye see him not, 2 cia, Asia, and Bithynia, ac- yet believing, ye rejoice greatcording to the foreknowledge ly with joy unspeakable and of God the Father, in sancti- 2 full of glory: receiving the 9 fication of the Spirit, unto end of your faith, even the obedience and sprinkling of salvation of your souls. To whom it was re- 12 vealed, that not unto themselves, but unto you, did they minister these things, which now have been announced unto you through them that preached the gospel unto you by the Holy Ghost sent forth from heaven; which things angels desire to look into.

3 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who according to his great mercy begat us again unto a living hope by the resurrection of Jesus Christ 4 from the dead, unto an inheritance incorruptible, and undefiled, and that fadeth not away, reserved in heaven for 5 you, who by the power of God are guarded through faith unto a salvation ready to be revealed in the last time. 6 Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, ye have been put to grief in manifold 1tempta7 tions, that the proof of your faith, being more precious than gold that perisheth though it is proved by fire, might be found unto praise and glory

And if ye call on him as Father, who without respect of persons judgeth according to each man's work, pass the time of your sojourning in 18 fear: knowing that ye were redeemed, not with corruptible things, with silver or gold, from your vain manner of life handed down from your fa19 thers; but with precious blood, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot, even the 20 blood of Christ: who was foreknown indeed before the foundation of the world, but was manifested at the end of 21 the times for your sake, who through him are believers in God, which raised him from the dead, and gave him glory; so that your faith and hope 22 might be in God. Seeing ye have purified your souls in your obedience to the truth unto unfeigned love of the brethren, love one another 2 from the heart fervently: 23 having been begotten again, not of corruptible seed, but of incorruptible, through the

Putting away therefore all 12 5 wickedness, and all guile, and hypocrisies, and envies, and all evil speakings, as new- 2 born babes, long for the "spiritual milk which is without guile, that ye may grow thereby unto salvation; if ye have 3 tasted that the Lord is gracious: unto whom coming, a 4 living stone, rejected indeed of men, but with God elect, 7precious, ye also, as living 5 stones, are built up a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God through Jesus Christ.
