LITERARY AND SCIENTIFIC NOTICES.

[merged small][ocr errors]

The King of France we learn has given directions for the publication of the Voyage Round the World, during the years 1824, 1825 and 1826, in the Thetis frigate, and Esperance brig, under the command of the Baron de Bongainville. The work is to be in quarto, illustrated by thirty plates; the subjects of which are Natural History, views of places where the expedition touched, costumes, &c. and an Atlas of eight large maps.

A work is announced for early publication, under the head of Rambles in Madeira and Portugal, during the early part of the year 1826, which will con tain a History of the Island, some account of the climate and the produce thereof, the talent of Westall, Nicholson, Villeneuve, Harding, Gauci, &c. are employed on the illustrations, to this work. All of which are taken from sketches made on the spot, depicting the most remarkable scenes and objects in the Island. The whole of which will be executed in lithography.

Mr. J. P. Neale has been engaged for some time past in making views of several interesting mansions, for the purpose of completing the " Views of Gentlemen and Noblemen's Seats," which he intends to resume the publica tion of in the ensuing Autumn.

The Rev. Dr. Russell is about to publish in two vols. octavo, the connection of sacred and profane History, from the death of Joshua, until the decline of the Kingdoms of Israel and Judah; intended as a completion to the works of Shuckford and Prideaux.

Mr. Peter Nicholson, author of many scientific works, is engaged on a new work to be published in Nos. a New Treatise entitled, the School of Arcnitecture and Engineering.

Part twenty-five of Lodge's Portraits of illustrious persons, has been publish ed as rich in treasures of art, as those

parts that have preceeded it; among its contents will be found Portraits of Lucius Carey, Lord Falkland from Vandyke, by J. Thomson, Ridley, Bishop of London, by H. Robinson, W. Villiers, Lord Grandison from Vandyke, by H. R. Cook, Spencer Compton, Earl of Northampton, by T. A. Dean and Robert Berlie, Earl of Lindsey, from Vandyke, by E. Scriven. The engravers have done justice to the paintings, as well as credit to their own talents.

SCULPTURE Mr. Lough the talented individual, whose pursuits of this branch of art in privation and obscurity, has been brought to notice by the daily and periodical Journals, it is said, has met a patron in the person of H. Brougham, Esq. who has engaged him to produce a stupendous Sampson for him; we hope the production will please the patron, and verify the predictions entertained of his gifted abilities, that he will become at no very dis tant period, one of our first sculptors.

Nu, 11, of the Parts of England, engraved in mezzotinto, from original drawings, made expressly for the work, by J. M. W. Turner, R.A, by Thomas Lupton, has been issued from the press.

In the first number of this publication, there was all that could be desired by the admirers of fiue drawings and engravings.

But the number under notice, we think surpasses the preceding one, and must call forth unmeasured praise, the objects on land are represented with great truth and solidity, and the skits and water are chef-d'ouvres of art.

The proprietors of that deservedly popular exhibition the DIORAMA, intend to re-open on the 4th June, with two new views, one "St. Cloud and the Environs of Paris," taken from Bas Meudon, and executed by Mons. Boulon: the other a fine Ruin of a Church" with effect of a fog, painted by Mons. Daguerre. Though scarcely to be credited, it is in every point of view equal to the late exhibition of Rosslyn Chapel.
