ROSLIN CASTLE.

THE village of Roslin is seven miles south of Edinburgh. Its population are principally occupied in agriculture and the process of bleaching. Near it are Roslin Castle and Chapel, objects more generally visited by strangers than any others in the county, one of which forms the frontispiece of this volume.

Roslin Castle stands on the river North Esk, a little below Pennycuick. It occupies a promontory round which the river winds, and from this it is supposed its name was derived, Rosslinne meaning the promontory of the waterfall. On the land side, it is separated from the adjoining grounds by a deep ravine, over which is a stone bridge, still remaining entire. The rock on which are the remains of the Castle rises up from the bed of the stream; on both sides the banks are high and precipitous, and are beautifully adorned with a most luxuriant vegetation.

Roslin Castle is said to have been first mentioned in history in the reign of James 11., when James, first Lord Hamilton, was confined for engaging in rebellion against that monarch. It was long the seat of the
