THE Character (not of a High Church-, nor Low Church-; nor Moderate Church, but) of a True Church of England. Man.

1, A Church of England Man is one that heartily, and effectually Believes in God the Father, Son, and Holy Ghoft, and leads fo regular a Chriftian Life, that he has a Right to, and is Qualify'd for, and live's in conftant actual Communion With the Church of England, and is zealous to communicate in all her Publick Religious Offices, Prayers, Reading, Praifes, and Sacraments; not only on Sundays but alfo on all the Feats and Fafts, and other folemn Days appointed by the Church, as well when there is not, as when there is a Sermon, 2, A Church-Man is one who is true to the Interest both of Church and State as by Law eftabished; I fay, both Church and State; for it has ever been, and I hope always will be the Glory of the Church of England that all her True Sons are very Loyal Subjects. The Church of England teaches her fons, when they obferve any Defects in their Governors, Ecclefiaftical or Civil, to conceal, lament, and excufe them, and all out of a Dutiful Regard to the Character they bear. But to expofe Failings where they are, or to make, em where they are not, God be thanked, was never any part of the spirit of our Church. It always inftill'd more Loyal and Religious Leffons. 3, A Church of England Man is one who takes the Measures of his Behavior, as a Son of the Church, from the Rule that our Church her felf has laid down for his Direction, in her Liturgy and Rubrick, her Articles, Homilies and Cannons. This, as grounded in Scripture, our great Rule, is the Path that our Conftitution has mark'd out; and they who walk in it (that is, who worship God, and obey their Superiors in fuch a manner as these prescribe, ) are truly Church-Men. 4, A Church Man is one who governs himself by Principle, and not by th uncertain turns of Humor, or Intereft. He will not be zealous for Monarchy and Epifcopacy at one time, and at another fall in with measures for diminishing the juft Prerogative, and depreffing his Ecclefiastical Superiors. Nor will he turn Advocate for the Popular Election of Bishops, when he finds his Aims not fo likely to fucceed at Court. In fhort a Church-Man is uniform under all Governments; and is not to be drawn by private Animofities and Resentments from purfùing Methods that really are, and himself has all along declared to be the fupports of our

Conftitution

Conftitution, and the Foundation of Peace and Order in Church and State. 5, A Church of England Man muft fignify one who is for preferving th' Effential Conftitution of the Church. Now the Conftitution of the Church of England is the fame that has been the conftitution of the Catholick Church ever fince th' Apoftolick Age, or as long as we have any Authentick Records of the Church; that is, The Government of the Church is in Bishops, with Presbyters and Deacons under'em. Ours is a National Church, and divided into two Provinces; each Province has a Metropolitan, with a Superior Jurifdiction over all the Bishops and Clergy of his Province; which fome think an Apoftolical, but, it is certain, is a very ancient conftitution of the Catholick Church.

p/on, fear thou the LORD, and the King: and meddle not with them that are given to change. Prov, 24.21.
