THE TWO courses of Sermons which follow were (with one exception) preached in succeeding years to the ordinary congregation assembled in Canterbury Cathedral, and may be considered as the farewell of one who will long remember his stay amongst them with grateful affection. Some allusions to the peculiar circumstances of the place (such as the occasional addresses to the ChapterSchool) will explain themselves; others will be intelligible to those concerned, and need no further notice here. But it may be as well briefly to state the general purpose which I had in view in these discourses, and which has determined me to select them for publication. I.
