His father William Williams, was born at Penyragae, Anglesea, and his mother was a daughter of John Owen, Ceryg Ddewi, Llangwyllog, Anglesea. His father having died, Mr. Williams with his widowed mother and two sisters emigrated to this country in 1850. They settled first at Waukesha,

Wis., and afterward removed in October 1851 to Detroit, Michigan. After completing his course in the public schools, Mr. Williams was employed in 1853 by J. S. Farrand & Co., Druggists, which was then a leading wholesale and retail establishment. Although he entered the lower ranks in the service, his promotion became rapid and continuous, his intelligence, industry and excellent business qual
