And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, 12
Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.

And when the devil had completed every 13 temptation, he departed from him 1for a

season.

And Jesus returned in the power of the 14 Spirit into Galilee and a fame went out concerning him through all the region round about. And he taught in their synagogues, being 15 glorified of all.

And he came to Nazareth, where he had 16 been brought up: and he entered, as his custom was, into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up to read. And there was 17 delivered unto him the book of the prophet Isaiah. And he opened the book, and found the place where it was written,

The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,

4 Because he anointed me to preach 'good tidings to the poor:

He hath sent me to proclaim release to the captives,

And recovering of sight to the blind,

To set at liberty them that are bruised,

18

To proclaim the acceptable year of the 19
Lord.

And he closed the book, and gave it back 20
to the attendant, and sat down: and the eyes
of all in the synagogue were fastened on him.
And he began to say unto them, To-day 21
hath this scripture been fulfilled in your
ears. And all bare him witness, and wondered 22
at the words of grace which proceeded out of
his mouth and they said, Is not this Joseph's

23 son? And he said unto them, Doubtless ye will say unto me this parable, Physician, heal thyself: whatsoever we have heard done at Capernaum, do also here in thine own country. 24 And he said, Verily I say unto you, No pro25 phet is acceptable in his own country. But of a truth I say unto you, There were many widows in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when there came a great famine over 26 all the land; and unto none of them was Elijah sent, but only to 'Zarephath, in the land Gr. Sarepta, of Sidon, unto a woman that was a widow. 27 And there were many lepers in Israel in the time of Elisha the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, but only Naaman the Syrian. 28 And they were all filled with wrath in the 29 synagogue, as they heard these things; and they rose up, and cast him forth out of the city, and led him unto the brow of the hill whereon their city was built, that they might 30 throw him down headlong. But he passing through the midst of them went his way. 31 And he came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee. And he was teaching them on the 32 sabbath day: and they were astonished at his teaching; for his word was with authority. 33 And in the synagogue there was a man, which had a spirit of an unclean 'devil; and he cried 34 out with a loud voice, Ah! what have we to do with thee, thou Jesus of Nazareth? art thou come to destroy us? I know thee who thou art, 35 the Holy One of God. And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Hold thy peace, and come out of him. And when the devil had thrown him down in the midst, he came out of him, having 36 done him no hurt. And amazement came upon all, and they spake together, one with

And he rose up from the synagogue, and 38 entered into the house of Simon. And Simon's wife's mother was holden with a great fever; and they besought him for her. And he stood 39 over her, and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she rose up and ministered unto them.

Judæa.

And when it was day, he came out and went 42 into a desert place: and the multitudes sought after him, and came unto him, and would have stayed him, that he should not go from them. But he said unto them, I must preach the good 43 tidings of the kingdom of God to the other cities also for therefore was I sent.

And he was preaching in the synagogues 44 of Galilee.

Now it came to pass, while the multitude 1 5 pressed upon him and heard the word of God, that he was standing by the lake of Gennesaret; and he saw two boats standing by the 2 lake: but the fishermen had gone out of them, and were washing their nets. And he entered 3 into one of the boats, which was Simon's, and asked him to put out a little from the land. And he sat down and taught the multitudes out

4 of the boat. And when he had left speaking, he said unto Simon, Put out into the deep, 5 and let down your nets for a draught. And Simon answered and said, Master, we toiled all night, and took nothing: but at thy word I will 6 let down the nets. And when they had this done, they inclosed a great multitude of fishes; 7 and their nets were breaking; and they beckoned unto their partners in the other boat, that they should come and help them. And they came, and filled both the boats, so that 8 they began to sink. But Simon Peter, when he saw it, fell down at Jesus' knees, saying, Depart from me; for I am a sinful man, O 9 Lord. For he was amazed, and all that were with him, at the draught of the fishes 10 which they had taken; and so were also James and John, sons of Zebedee, which were partners with Simon. And Jesus said unto Simon, Fear not; from henceforth thou shalt II 'catch men. And when they had brought their 'Gr. take alive. boats to land, they left all, and followed him.

And it came to pass, while he was in one of the cities, behold, a man full of leprosy: and when he saw Jesus, he fell on his face, and besought him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou 13 canst make me clean. And he stretched forth

his hand, and touched him, saying, I will; be thou made clean. And straightway the leprosy 14 departed from him. And he charged him to tell no man: but go thy way, and shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing, according as Moses commanded, for a testimony unto 15 them. But so much the more went abroad the report concerning him: and great multitudes came together to hear, and to be healed of their 16 infirmities. But he withdrew himself in the deserts, and prayed.

2 Or, Why

Or, authority

And it came to pass on one of those days, 17 that he was teaching; and there were Pharisees and doctors of the law sitting by, which were come out of every village of Galilee and Judæa and Jerusalem: and the power of the Lord was with him to heal. And behold, men bring 18 on a bed a man that was palsied and they sought to bring him in, and to lay him before him. And not finding by what way they might 19 bring him in because of the multitude, they went up to the housetop, and let him down through the tiles with his couch into the midst before Jesus. And seeing their faith, he said, 20 Man, thy sins are forgiven thee. And the 21 scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this that speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone? But 22 Jesus perceiving their reasonings, answered and said unto them, "What reason ye in your hearts? Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins 23 are forgiven thee; or to say, Arise and walk? But that ye may know that the Son of man 24 hath power on earth to forgive sins (he said unto him that was palsied), I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go unto thy house. And immediately he rose up before 25 them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his house, glorifying God. And 26 amazement took hold on all, and they glorified God; and they were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to-day.

And after these things he went forth, and 27 beheld a publican, named Levi, sitting at the place of toll, and said unto him, Follow me. And he forsook all, and rose up and followed 28 him. And Levi made him a great feast in his 29 house and there was a great multitude of publicans and of others that were sitting at
