Each paper consists of twelve questions, according to the following plan: questions 1 and 2 deal with Shakespeare's works; question 12 contains a set of passages, of which the candidate is asked to state the context of four; while the remaining nine questions concern general English literature with which a student entering for this examination should be more or less familiar. A candidate should attempt one of the Shakespeare questions, the context question, and three of those on general literature; that is, five in all.
