the prophets have spoken! Behoved it not the 26
Christ to suffer these things, and to enter into
his glory? And beginning from Moses and 27
from all the prophets, he interpreted to them
in all the scriptures the things concerning him-
self. And they drew nigh unto the village, 28
whither they were going: and he made as
though he would go further. And they con- 29
strained him, saying, Abide with us: for it is
toward evening, and the day is now far spent.
And he went in to abide with them. And 30
it came to pass, when he had sat down with
them to meat, he took the 'bread, and blessed
it, and brake, and gave to them. And their 31
eyes were opened, and they knew him; and
he vanished out of their sight. And they said 32
one to another, Was not our heart burning
within us, while he spake to us in the way,
while he opened to us the scriptures? And 33
they rose up that very hour, and returned to
Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered toge-
ther, and them that were with them, saying, 34
The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared
to Simon. And they rehearsed the things that 35
happened in the way, and how he was known
of them in the breaking of the bread.

And as they spake these things, he him- 36 self stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace be unto you. But they were ter- 37 rified and affrighted, and supposed that they beheld a spirit. And he said unto them, Why 38 are ye troubled? and wherefore do reasonings arise in your heart? And the light shineth in the 5 darkness; and the darkness apprehended it not. There came a man, sent from God, 6 whose name was John. And he 22 answered, No. They said therefore unto him, Who art thou? that we may give an answer to them that sent us. What sayest thou of thy23 self? He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of 24 the Lord, as said Isaiah the prophet. And 25 they had been sent from the Pharisees. And they asked him, and said unto him, Why then baptizest thou, if thou art not the Christ, 26 neither Elijah, neither the prophet? John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: Or, in in the midst of you standeth one whom ye 27 know not, even he that cometh after me, the latchet of whose shoe I am not worthy to 28 unloose. Again on the morrow John was standing, and 35 two of his disciples; and he looked upon Jesus 36 as he walked, and saith, Behold, the Lamb of God! And the two disciples heard him speak, 37 and they followed Jesus. And Jesus turned, 38 and beheld them following, and saith unto them, What seek ye? And they said unto him, Rabbi (which is to say, being interpreted, Or, Teacher Master), where abidest thou? He saith unto 39 them, Come, and ye shall see. They came therefore and saw where he abode; and they abode with him that day: it was about the tenth hour. One of the two that heard John 40 speak, and followed him, was Andrew, Simon Peter's brother.
