of fishes. That disciple therefore whom Jesus 7 loved saith unto Peter, It is the Lord. So when Simon Peter heard that it was the Lord, he girt his coat about him (for he was naked), and cast himself into the sea. But the other disciples 8 came in the little boat (for they were not far from the land, but about two hundred cubits off), dragging the net full of fishes. So when 9 1 Gr. a fire of they got out upon the land, they see 1a fire of coals there, and fish laid thereon, and 3bread. Jesus saith unto them, Bring of the fish which 10 ye have now taken. Simon Peter therefore 11 went up, and drew the net to land, full of great fishes, a hundred and fifty and three: and for all there were so many, the net was not rent. Jesus saith unto them, Come and 12 break your fast. And none of the disciples durst inquire of him, Who art thou? knowing that it was the Lord. Jesus cometh, and taketh 13 the bread, and giveth them, and the fish likewise. This is now the third time that Jesus 14 was manifested to the disciples, after that he was risen from the dead.

So when they had broken their fast, Jesus 15 saith to Simon Peter, Simon, son of John, 7 lovest thou me more than these? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I 8 love thee. He saith unto him, Feed my different Greek lambs. He saith to him again a second time, 16 Simon, son of John, 'lovest thou me? He saith unto him, Yea, Lord; thou knowest that I love thee. He saith unto him, Tend my sheep. He saith unto him the third time, 17 Simon, son of John, lovest thou me? Peter was grieved because he said unto him the third time, Lovest thou me? And he said unto him, Lord, thou knowest all things; thou Or, perceivest knowest that I love thee. Jesus saith unto

Verily, verily, I say unto thee, When thou wast young, thou girdedst thyself, and walkedst whither thou wouldest but when thou shalt be old, thou shalt stretch forth thy hands, and another shall gird thee, and carry thee whither thou wouldest not. 19 Now this he spake, signifying by what manner of death he should glorify God. And when he had spoken this, he saith unto him, Follow 20 me. Peter, turning about, seeth the disciple whom Jesus loved following; which also leaned back on his breast at the supper, and said, 21 Lord, who is he that betrayeth thee? Peter

This saying therefore went forth among the brethren, that that disciple should not die: yet Jesus said not unto him, that he should not die; but, If I will that he tarry till I come, what is that to thee? This is the disciple which beareth witness of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his witness is true.

And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself would not contain the books that should be written.

ACTS OF THE APOSTLES.

I

THE 'former treatise I made, O Theophilus, 1 1 concerning all that Jesus began both to do and to teach, until the day in which he was 2 received up, after that he had given commandment through the Holy Ghost unto the apostles whom he had chosen: to whom he also 3 3 shewed himself alive after his passion by many Gr. presented. proofs, appearing unto them by the space of forty days, and speaking the things concerning the kingdom of God: and, being assembled 4 together with them, he charged them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, said he, ye heard from me: for John indeed baptized with water; but ye 5 shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.

They therefore, when they were come to- 6 gether, asked him, saying, Lord, dost thou at this time restore the kingdom to Israel? And 7 he said unto them, It is not for you to know Or, appointed times or seasons, which the Father hath set by

within his own authority. But ye shall receive 8 power, when the Holy Ghost is come upon you and ye shall be my witnesses both in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. And 9 when he had said these things, as they were looking, he was taken up; and a cloud received him out of their sight. And while they were look- 10 ing stedfastly into heaven as he went, behold, two men stood by them in white apparel;

11 which also said, Ye men of Galilee, why stand ye looking into heaven? this Jesus, which was received up from you into heaven, shall so come in like manner as ye beheld him going into heaven.

Then returned they unto Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is nigh unto Jeru13 salem, a sabbath day's journey off. And when they were come in, they went up into the upper chamber, where they were abiding; both Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphæus, and Simon the Zealot, and 14 Judas the son of James. These all with one accord continued stedfastly in prayer, 2with the women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brethren.

a multitude of 3persons gathered together, about Gr. names. 16 a hundred and twenty), Brethren, it was needful that the scripture should be fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost spake before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who was guide to 17 them that took Jesus. For he was numbered among us, and received his portion in this 'Or, lot 18 ministry. (Now this man obtained a field with

the reward of his iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all 19 his bowels gushed out. And it became known

to all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch that in their language that field was called Akel20 dama, that is, The field of blood.) For it is written in the book of Psalms,

Let his habitation be made desolate,
And let no man dwell therein :

His office let another take.

Of the men therefore which have companied 21
with us all the time that the Lord Jesus went
in and went out 1among us, beginning from the 22
baptism of John, unto the day that he was re-
ceived up from us, of these must one become
a witness with us of his resurrection. And 23
they put forward two, Joseph called Barsabbas,
who was surnamed Justus, and Matthias. And 24
they prayed, and said, Thou, Lord, which
knowest the hearts of all men, shew of these
two the one whom thou hast chosen, to take 25
the place in this ministry and apostleship, from
which Judas fell away, that he might go to his
own place. And they gave lots 2 for them; and 26
the lot fell upon Matthias; and he was num-
bered with the eleven apostles.

And when the day of Pentecost was now 1 2 come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound a as of the rushing of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And 3 Or, parting there appeared unto them tongues parting asunder, like as of fire; and it sat upon each one of them. Now there were dwelling at Jerusalem Jews, 5 devout men, from every nation under heaven. And when this sound was heard, the multitude 6 came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speaking in his own language. And they were all amazed and mar- 7 velled, saying, Behold, are not all these which speak Galilæans? And how hear we, every 8 man in our own language, wherein we were born?
