That it may please thee to strengthen such as do stand to comfort and help the weak hearted: to raise up them that fall; to succour, help, and comfort all that are in danger, necessity, and tribulation: and finally to remove every adversary out of our path:

We beseech thee to hear us, good Lord.

That it may please thee to have mercy upon all men: preserve and bless our sailors and soldiers, and all persons that travel by land or by water: all women laboring of child: all sick persons and young children; defend and provide for the fatherless children and widows, and all that are desolate and oppressed and show thy pity on all prisoners and captives:

We beseech thee to hear us, good Lord.

That it may please thee to forgive our enemies, persecutors, and slanderers, and to turn their hearts give unto us true repentance; forgive all our sins, negligences, and ignorances, and endue us with the grace of thy Holy spirit to amend our lives according to thy word:

We beseech thee to hear us, good Lord.

That it may please thee to accept our sincere and hearty thanksgivings for all thy good and merciful gifts bestowed upon us and evermore help us to use them both for our own benefit and the good of others, that we may render our account to thee with joy, and not with grief:

We beseech thee to hear us, good Lord.

GOD, merciful Father, that despisest not the sighing of a contrite heart, nor the desires of such as be sorrowful; mercifully assist our prayers that we make before thee in all our troubles and adversities, whensoever they oppress us; and graciously hear us, that those evils which the craft and subtlety of our enemies work against us may be brought to naught; and by the providence of thy goodness they may be dispersed; that we, thy servants, being hurt by no persecution, may evermore give thanks unto thee, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

FIRST ORDER.

At the beginning of Evening Prayer the Minister shall read the following Sentences from the Scriptures. Minister and Congregation standing.

F the ungodly will turn away from all his sins that he hath done, and keep all my commandments, and do the thing that is equal and right, doubtless he shall live and not die. As for all his sins that he did before, they shall not be thought upon: but in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live. For I have no pleasure in the death of a sinner, saith the Lord God, but rather that he turn and live. Ezek. 18.

The Lord your God is gracious and merciful, and will not turn away his face from you if ye return unto him. 2 Chron. XXX. 9.

If from thence thou shalt seek the Lord thy God, thou shalt find him, if thou seek him with all thy heart and with all thy soul. Deut. iv. 29.

EARLY beloved brethren, this is the hour of prayer, and the time for praise and gladness, when the blessing of the Most High, descending upon us, refreshes and purifies our souls: assuring us of a more perfect state and of a happier world. Let us, then, look upon the great and blessed God as our heavenly Father, and worship him in spirit

and in truth and putting away from us all irreverence and unholy fear, let us draw nigh to him with a true heart, and receive his love and mercy in the name of Jesus Christ, confessing our sins, and saying:

A General Confession, to be said of the whole Congriyution, Anceling.

We acknowledge our manifold sins which from time to time we have committed in thought, word, and deed. sincerely repent, and are heartily sorry for these our misdoings. Have mercy upon us, O Father: forgive us all that is past, and grant that we may hereafter serve and please thee in newness of life, to the honour and glory of thy holy name. Amen.

The people shall answer here and at the end of all other Prayers, AMEN.

The Absolution: or Remission of Sins.

MOST merciful God, who, according to the multitude of thy mercies, dost so put away the sins of those who truly repent that thou rememberest them no more. Show thy mercy upon us thy servants, who have made confession of our sins, and who most earnestly desire thy pardon and forgiveness. Renew in us whatsoever hath been decayed of the life and love of God in our souls; and forasmuch as we put our trust only in thy mercy, help us in the ways of righteousness, peace, and truth, that we may henceforth more perfectly.
