which shall stand for an ensign of the people; to it shall the Gentiles seek: and his rest shall be glorious." -Isa. xi. 10.

FULFILMENT."The star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts; gold, and frankincense, and myrrh."-Matt. ii. 9-11.

PROPHECY. "When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt."Hosea xi. 1.

FULFILMENT." Behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, Arise, and take the young child and his mother, and flee into Egypt, and be thou there until I bring thee word: for Herod will seek the young child, to destroy him. When he arose, he took the young child and his mother by night, and departed into Egypt: and was there until the death of Herod, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son." Matt. ii. 13–15.

PROPHECY.-"A voice was heard in Ramah, lamentation, and bitter weeping; Rahel weeping for her children, refused to be comforted for her children, because they were not."-Jer. xxxi. 15.

FULFILMENT.- "Then Herod, when he saw that he was mocked of the wise men, was exceeding wroth, and sent forth, and slew all the children that were in Bethlehem, and in all the coasts thereof, from two years old and under, according to the time which he had diligently enquired of the wise men. Then was fulfilled that which was spoken by Jeremy the prophet, saying, In Rama was there a voice heard,

lamentation, and weeping, and great mourning, Rachel weeping for her children, and would not be comforted, because they are not."-Matt. ii. 16-18.

PROPHECY." The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge, and of the fear of the Lord."-Isa xi. 2.

FULFILMENT.- "The child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, filled with wisdom; and the grace of God was upon him.”—Luke ii. 40.

"All that heard him were astonished at his understanding and answers."-Luke ii. 47.

"And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.”—Luke ii. 52.

PROPHECY." The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make straight in the desert a high-way for our God."— Isa. xl. 3.

"Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me."-Mal. iii. 1.

FULFILMENT."And this is the record of John, when the Jews sent priests and Levites from Jerusalem to ask him, Who art thou?......He said, I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness, Make straight the way of the Lord, as said the prophet Esaias."-John i. 19-23. See Matt. iii. 1-3.; Luke i. 76-78.; Matt. xi. 10.

"As it is written in the prophets, Behold, I send my messenger before thy face, which shall prepare thy way before thee."-Mark i. 2.

PROPHECY." Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the Lord: and he shall turn the heart of the fathers to the children, and the heart of the children to their fathers, lest I come and smite the earth with a curse."-Mal. iv. 5, 6.

FULFILMENT." And the disciples asked Jesus,

saying, Why say the scribes that Elias must first come? And he answered and told them, Elias verily cometh first, and restoreth all things......I say unto you, That Elias is indeed come, and they have done unto him whatsoever they listed, as it is written of him. -Mark ix. 11-13.

"If ye will receive it, this is Elias which was for to come. He that hath ears to hear, let him hear."-Matt. xi. 14, 15. See Matt. xvii. 12, 13.

"The angel said unto him, Fear not, Zacharias: for thy prayer is heard; and thy wife Elisabeth shall shall bear thee a son, and thou shalt call his name John......And many of the children of Israel shall he turn to the Lord their God. And he shall go before him in the spirit and power of Elias, to turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the disobedient to the wisdom of the just; to make ready a people prepared for the Lord."-Luke i. 13, 16, 17.

PROPHECY." The Lord, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts. But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fuller's soap. And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the Lord an offering in righteousness."-Mal. iii. 1-3.

FULFILMENT." And as the people were in expectation, and all men mused in their hearts of John, whether he were the Christ or not; John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptise you with water; but one mighter than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose : he shall baptise you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire: whose fan is in his hand, and he will throughly purge his floor, and will gather the wheat into his

garner; but the chaff he will burn with fire unquenchable."—Luke iii. 15—17.

PROPHECY." Behold my servant, whom I uphold, mine elect, in whom my soul delighteth: I have put my spirit upon him."”—Isa. xlii. 1.

FULFILMENT.-"And it came to pass in those days, that Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee, and was baptised of John in Jordan. And straightway coming up out of the water, he saw the heavens opened, and the Spirit, like a dove, descending upon him and there came a voice from heaven, saying, Thou art my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased." -Mark i. 9-11.

"God giveth not the Spirit by measure unto him."-John iii. 34.

PROPHECY."Say unto the cities of Judah, Behold your God!"-Isa. xl. 9.

"Lo, this is our God; we have waited for him, and he will save us: this is the Lord; we have waited for him, we will be glad and rejoice in his salvation." -Isa. xxv. 9.

FULFILMENT.-"The next day, John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world! This is he of whom I said, After me cometh a man which is preferred before me: for he was before me." John i. 29, 30.

"Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people, and hath raised up an horn of salvation for us, in the house of his servant David; as he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began."Luke i. 68-70.

PROPHECY." Nevertheless, the dimness shall not be such as was in her vexation, when at the first he lightly afflicted the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, and afterward did more grievously afflict

her by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, in Galilee of the nations. The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwell in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined."-Isa. ix. 1, 2.

FULFILMENT." Leaving Nazareth, he came and dwelt in Capernaum, (a city of Galilee,*) which is upon the sea coast, in the borders of Zabulon and Nephthalim: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by Esaias the prophet, saying, The land of Zabulon, and the land of Nephthalim, by the way of the sea, beyond Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles; the people which sat in darkness saw great light: and to them which sat in the region and shadow of death, light is sprung up."-Matt. iv. 13-16.

PROPHECY." The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me; because the Lord hath anointed me to preach good tidings unto the meek: he hath sent me to bind up the broken-hearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and the opening of the prison to them that are bound; to proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord."-Isa. lxi. 1, 2.

FULFILMENT.-"He came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the Sabbath-day, and stood up for to read. And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written, The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised, to preach the acceptable year of the Lord......And he began to say unto them, This day is this Scripture fulfilled in your ears."-Luke iv. 16-21.
