to the multitude of thy mercies, do even for the living GOD: when shall away mine offences. Wash me thoroughly from my wickedness, and cleanse me from my sin: For I acknowledge my faults, and my sin is ever before me. Against thee only have I sinned, and done this evil in thy sight, that thou mightest be justified in thy say ing, and clear when thou art judged. Behold, I was shapen in wickedness, and in sin hath my mother conceived me. But lo, thou requirest truth in the inward parts, and shalt make me to understand wisdom secretly. Thou shalt purge me with hyssop, and I shall be clean; thou shalt wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow. Thou shalt make me hear of joy and gladness, that the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice. Turn thy face from my sins, and put out all my misdeeds. Make me a clean heart, O GOD, and renew a right spirit within me. Cast me not away from thy presence, and take not thy holy Spirit from me. O give me the comfort of thy help again, and stablish me with thy free Spirit. Then shall I teach thy ways unto the wicked, and sinners shall be converted unto thee. Deliver me from blood-guiltiness, O GOD, thou that art the GOD of my health, and my tongue shall sing of thy righteousness. Thou shalt open my lips, O LORD, and my mouth shall show thy praise. For thou desirest no sacrifice, else would I give it thee; but thou delightest not in burnt-offerings. The sacrifice of GOD, is a troubled spirit: a broken and contrite heart, O GOD, shalt thou not despise. FROM PSALM 42. Quemadmodum. LIKE as the hart desireth the water-brooks, so longeth my soul after thee, O GOD. My soul is athirst for God, yea, I come to appear before the presence of GOD? My tears have been my meat day and night; while they daily say unto me, Where is now thy GOD? Now when I think thereupon, I pour out my heart by myself; for I went with the multitude, and brought them forth into the house of GOD, In the voice of praise and thanks. giving, among such as keep holyday. Why art thou so full of heaviness, O my soul? and why art thou so disquieted within me ? Put thy trust in God; for I will yet give him thanks for the help of his countenance. The LORD hath granted his loving. kindness in the day-time; and in the night-season did I sing of him, and made my prayer unto the GOD of my life. I will say unto the God of my strength, Why hast thou forgotten me? why go I thus heavily, while the enemy oppresseth me? Namely, while they say daily unto me, Where is now thy GOD? Why art thou so vexed, O my, soul? and why art thou so disquieted within me? O put thy trust in GoD; for I will yet thank him, who is the help of my countenance and my GOD. SELECTION IV. PSALM 37. Noli æmulari. FRET not thyself because of the ungodly; neither be thou envious against the evil doers: For they shall soon be cut down like the grass, and be withered even as the green herb. Put thou thy trust in the LORD, and be doing good; dwell in the land, and verily thou shalt be fed. Delight thou in the LORD, and he shall give thee thy heart's desire. Commit thy way unto the LORD, and put thy trust in him, and he shal bring it to pass. He shall make thy righteousness as clear as the light; and thy just dealing as the noon-day. Hold thee still in the LORD, and abide patiently upon him; but grieve not thyself at him whose way doth prosper, against the man that doeth after evil counsels. Leave off from wrath, and let go displeasure; fret not thyself, else shalt thou be moved to do evil. Wicked doers shall be rooted out; and they that patiently abide the LORD, those shall inherit the land. Yet a little while, and the ungodly shall be clean gone; thou shalt look after his place, and he shall be away. But the meek-spirited shall possess the earth, and shall be refreshed in the multitude of peace. The ungodly seeketh counsel against the just, and gnasheth upon him with his teeth. possess the land; and they that are cursed of him, shall be rooted out. The LORD ordereth a good man's going, and maketh his ways accepta. ble to himself. Though he fall, he shall not be cast away; for the LORD upholdeth him with his hand. I have been young, and now am old, and yet saw I never the righteous forsaken, nor his seed begging their bread. The righteous is ever merciful, and lendeth; and his seed is blessed. Flee from evil, and do the thing that is good, and dwell for evermore. For the LORD loveth the thing that is right; he forsaketh not his that be godly, but they are preserved for ever. The unrighteous shall be punished; as for the seed of the ungodly, it shall The LORD shall laugh him to be rooted out. scorn; for he hath seen that his day is coming. The ungodly have drawn out the sword, and have bent their bow, to cast down the poor and needy, and to slay such as are of a right conversation. Their sword shall go through their own heart, and their bow shall be broken. A small thing that the righteous hath, is better than great riches of the ungodly; For the arms of the ungodly shall be broken, and the LORD upholdeth the righteous. The LORD knoweth the days of the godly; and their inheritance shall endure for ever. The righteous shall inherit the land, and dwell therein for ever. The mouth of the righteous is exercised in wisdom, and his tongue will be talking of judgment. The law of his GOD is in his heart, and his goings shall not slide. The ungodly seeth the righteous, and seeketh occasion to slay him. The LORD will not leave him in his hand, nor condeinn him when he is judged. Hope thou in the LORD, and keep his way, and he shall promote thee, that thou shalt possess the land: when the ungodly shall perish, thou shalt see it. I myself have seen the ungodly in great power, and flourishing like a green bay-tree. They shall not be confounded in the perilous time; and in the days of I went by, and lo, he was gone: I dearth they shall have enough. As for the ungodly, they shall perish, and the enemies of the LORD shall consume as the fat of lambs; yea, even as the smoke shall they consume away. The ungodly borroweth, and pay eth not again; but the righteous is merciful and liberal. sought him, but his place could nowhere be found. Keep innocency, and take heed unto the thing that is right; for that shall bring a man peace at the last. As for the transgressors, they shall perish together: and the end of the ungodly is, they shall be rooted out at the last. SELECTION V. PSALM 1. Beatus vir, qui non abiit. BLESSED is the man that hath not walked in the counsel of the ungodly, nor stood in the way of sinners, and hath not sat in the seat of the scornful: But his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law will he exercise himself day and night. And he shall be like a tree planted by the water-side, that will bring forth his fruit in due season. His leaf also shall not wither; and look, whatsoever he doeth, it shall prosper. As for the ungodly, it is not so with them, but they are like the chaff which the wind scattereth away from the face of the earth. Therefore the ungodly shall not be able to stand in the judgment, neither the sinners in the congregation of the righteous. But the LORD knoweth the way of the righteous; and the way of the ungodly shall perish. PSALM 15. Domine, quis habitabit. LORD, who shall dwell in thy tabernacle? or who shall rest upon thy holy hill? though it were to his own hindrance: He that hath not given his money upon usury, nor taken reward against the innocent: Whoso doeth these things, shall never fall. PSALM 91. Qui habitat. WHOSO dwelleth under the de. fence of the Most High, shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.. I will say unto the LORD, Thou art my hope, and my strong hold; my GOD, in him will I trust. For be shall deliver thee from the snare of the hunter, and from the noisome pestilence. He shall defend thee under his wings, and thou shalt be safe under his feathers; his faithfulness and truth shall be thy shield and buckler. Thou shalt not be afraid for any terror by night, nor for the arrow that flieth by day; For the pestilence that walketh in darkness, nor for the sickness that destroyeth in the noon-day. A thousand shall fall beside thee, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee. Yea, with thine eyes shalt thou behold, and see the reward of the ungodly. For thou, LORD, art my hope; thou hast set thine house of defence very high. There shall no evil happen unto thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling. For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy Even he that leadeth an uncorrupt life, and doeth the thing which is ways. right, and speaketh the truth from his heart: He that hath used no deceit in his tongue, nor done evil to his neighbor, and hath not slandered his neighbor: He that setteth not by himself, but is lowly in his own eyes, and maketh much of them that fear the LORD: They shall bear thee in their hands; that thou hurt not thy foot against a stone. Thou shalt go upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dra. gon shalt thou tread under thy feet. Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him; I will set him up, because he hath known my name He shall call upon me, and I will hear him; yea, I am with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and bring him to honor. With long life will I satisfy him, and show him my salvation. SELECTION VI. FROM PSALM 32. Beati, quorum. BLESSED is he whose unrighteousness is forgiven, and whose sin is covered. Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth no sin, and in whose spirit there is no guile. I will acknowledge my sin unto thee; and mine unrighteousness have I not hid. I said, I will confess my sins unto the LORD; and so thou forgavest the wickedness of my sin. For this shall every one that is godly make his prayer unto thee, in a time when thou mayest be found; but in the great water floods they shall not come nigh him. Thou art a place to hide me in; thou shalt preserve me from trouble; thou shalt compass me about with songs of deliverance. I will inform thee, and teach thee in the way wherein thou shalt go; and I will guide thee with mine eye. Great plagues remain for the ungodly; but whoso putteth his trust in the LORD, mercy embraceth him on every side. Be glad, O ye righteous, and rejoice in the LORD; and be joyful, all ye that are true of heart. PSALM 130. De profundis. OUT of the deep have I called unto thee, O LORD; LORD, hear my voice. O let thine ears consider well the voice of my complaint. If thou, LORD, wilt be extreme to mark what is done amiss, O LORD, who may abide it? For there is mercy with thee; therefore shalt thou be feared. I look for the LORD; my soul doth wait for him; in his word is my trust. My soul fleeth unto the LORD before the morning watch; I say, before the morning watch. O Israel, trust in the LORD; for with the LORD there is mercy, and with him is plenteous redemption. And he shall redeem Israel from all his sins. PSALM 121. Levavi ocuzs meos. I WILL lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh even from the LORD, who hath made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved, and he that keepeth thee will not sleep. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The LORD himself is thy keeper; the LORD is thy defence upon thy right hand: So that the sun shall not burn thee by day; neither the moon by night.. The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil; yea, it is even he that shall keep thy soul. The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in, from this time forth for evermore. shall follow me all the days of my life; and I will dwell in the house of the LORD for ever. PSALM 34. Benedicam Domino. I WILL alway give thanks unto the LORD; his praise shall ever be in my mouth. My soul shall make her boast in the LORD; the humble shall hear thereof, and be glad. O praise the LORD with me; and let us magnify his name together. I sought the LORD, and he heard me; yea, he delivered me out of all my fear. They had an eye unto him, and were lightened; and their faces were not ashamed. Lo, the poor crieth, and the LORD heareth him; yea, and saveth him out of all his troubles. The angel of the LORD tarrieth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them. O taste, and see, how gracious the LORD is: blessed is the man that trusteth in him. O fear the LORD, ye that are his saints; for they that fear him lack nothing. The lions do lack, and suffer hunger; but they who seek the LORD shall want no manner of thing that is good. Come, ye children, and hearken unto me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD. What man is he that lusteth to live, and would fain see good days? Keep thy tongue from evil, and thy lips, that they speak no guile. Eschew evil, and do good; seek peace, and ensue it. The eyes of the LORD are over the righteous, and his ears are open unto their prayers. The countenance of the LORD is against them that do evil, to root out the remembrance of them from the earth. The righteous cry, and the LORD heareth them, and delivereth them out of all their troubles. The LORD is nigh unto those who are of a contrite heart, and will save such as are of an humble spirit. Great are the troubles of the righteous; but the LORD delivereth him out of all. He keepeth all his bones, so that not one of them is broken. But misfortune shall slay the ungodly; and they that hate the righte ous shall be desolate. The LORD delivereth the souls of his servants; and all they that put their trust in him shall not be destitute. PSALM 65. Te decet hymnus. THOU, O GOD, art praised in Sion; and unto thee shall the vow be performed in Jerusalem. Thou that hearest the prayer, unto thee shall all flesh come. My misdeeds prevail against me: O be thou merciful unto our sins. Blessed is the man whom thou choosest, and receivest unto thee: he shall dwell in thy court, and shall be satisfied with the pleasures of thy house, even of thy holy temple. Thou shalt show us wonderful things in thy righteousness, O GOD of our salvation; thou that art the hope of all the ends of the earth, and of them that remain in the broad sea.
