IN presenting the first volume of this publication to the Lord's little ones, it may be desirable to state, that the great object we have in view, is to direct their minds to God's blessed WRITTEN WORD the only revealed will of Jehovah-and thereby, through the gracious power of the Holy Ghost, into closer fellowship with the Father, and with His Son Jesus Christ, the source of all peace, comfort, and spiritual strength. All teaching, we conceive, that does not tend thus to cast the soul upon God Himself, comes short of the Lord's revealed purpose in giving gifts for the edifying of "the body." Any attempt, however, to promote this end, is, through the infirmity of the instrument, associated with imperfection. Let our beloved readers, therefore, receive what is here recorded, only as it is confirmed by the word of God; at the same time. iv. being careful not to reject any views which are advanced, that are clearly conformable to that holy standard. Dear children of God! Let us increasingly seek to be filled with God Himself, by reading, pondering, praying over, and believing His blessed truth. Let our searchings after knowledge be in order to have a more perfect acquaintance with His mind, that so God may be our aim and end. Let us more earnestly covet His love to be more abundantly shed abroad in our hearts; and let the grateful remembrance of the death of the Son of God for us, constrain us to yield ourselves unreservedly unto Him. It has pleased the Lord to stir up many of His honoured servants to contribute papers to this little volume, for which we desire to express our unfeigned thanks. We now commend these pages to the gracious blessing of our covenant God, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, to whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen, and Amen. |
