Remember ye not, that, 5 when I was yet with you, I told you these things? And 6 now ye know that which restraineth, to the end that he may be revealed in his own season. For the mystery of 7 lawlessness doth already work: 7only there is one that restraineth now, until he be taken out of the way. And then shall be 8 revealed the lawless one, whom the Lord Jesus shall 9 slay with the breath of his mouth, and bring to nought by the manifestation of his coming; even he, whose 3 coming is 9 according to the working of Satan with all 10 power and signs and lying wonders, and 10 with all deceit of unrighteousness for them that are perishonly the love of the truth, that ing; because they received not ancient ness. 5 Gr. an worship. 6 Or, sanc until he that now 11 day. But the Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and guard you 4 from 2 the evil one. And we have confidence in the Lord touching you, that ye both do and will do the things which 5 we command. And the Lord direct your hearts into the love of God, and into the patience of Christ. 6 Now we command you, brethren, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye withdraw yourselves from every brother that walketh disorderly, and not after the tradition which 7 3they received of us. For yourselves know how ye ought to imitate us: for we behaved not ourselves disorderly a8 mong you; neither did we eat bread for nought at any man's hand, but in labour and travail, working night and day, that we might not burden any 9 of you: not because we have 1 Or, the 2 Or, evil 3 Some ye. not the right, but to make ourselves an ensample unto you, that ye should imitate us. For even when we were with 10 you, this we commanded you, If any will not work, neither let him eat. For we hear of 11 some that walk among you disorderly, that work not at all, but are busybodies. Now 12 them that are such we command and exhort in the Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread. But ye, brethren, 13 be not weary in well-doing. And if any man obeyeth not 14 our word by this epistle, note that man, that ye have no company with him, to the end that he may be ashamed. And 15 yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother. Now the Lord of peace him- 16 self give you peace at all times in all ways. The Lord be with you all. I exhort therefore, first of all, 2 9that supplications, prayers, intercessions, thanksgivings, be made for all men; for kings 2 and all that are in high place; that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and gravity. This is good and 3 acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; who willeth that 4 all men should be saved, and come to the knowledge of the truth. For there is one God, 5 one mediator also between God and men, himself man, Christ Jesus, who gave himself a 6 ransom for all; the testimony to be borne in its own times; whereunto I was appointed a 7 10 preacher and an apostle (I speak the truth, I lie not), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth. I desire therefore that the 8 men pray in every place, lifting up holy hands, without wrath and 11 disputing. The 3 bishop therefore must be without reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, soberminded, orderly, given to hospitality, apt to 3 teach; 4no brawler, no striker; but gentle, not contentious, 4 no lover of money; one that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjec5 tion with all gravity; (but if a man knoweth not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of 6 God?) not a novice, lest being puffed up he fall into the 5 condemnation of the devil. 7 Moreover he must have good testimony from them that are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the 8 The 8 devil. Deacons in like manner must be grave, not doubletongued, not given to much wine, not greedy of filthy rests on 9 lucre; holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience. 10 And let these also first be proved; then let them serve as deacons, if they be blame11 less. Women in like manner must be grave, not slanderers, temperate, faithful in all 12 things. Let deacons be husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses 13 well. For they that have served well as deacons gain to themselves a good standing, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus. 14 These things write I unto 6 Or, how thou oughtest to behave thyself 7 Or, stay word God, in place of He who, no sufficient ancient evidence. And 16 without controversy great is the mystery of godliness; 8 He who was manifested in the flesh, justified in the spirit, seen of angels, preached among the nations, believed on in the world, received up in glory. But the Spirit saith express- 4 ly, that in later times some shall fall away from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits and doctrines of 9 devils, through the hypocrisy of men 2 that speak lies, 10 branded in their own conscience as with a hot iron; forbidding to mar- 3 ry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God created to be received with thanksgiving by them that believe and know the truth. For 4 every creature of God is good, and nothing is to be rejected, if it be received with thanksgiving: for it is sanctified through 5 the word of God and prayer. If thou put the brethren 6 in mind of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished in the words of the faith, and of the good doctrine which thou hast followed until now: but re- 7 fuse profane and old wives' fables. And exercise thyself unto godliness: for bodily ex- 8 ercise is profitable 11 for a little; but godliness is profitable for all things, having promise of the life which now is, and of that which is to come. Faithful is the saying, and 9 worthy of all acceptation. For 10 to this end we labour and strive, because we have our 260 I. Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an ensample to them that believe, in word, in manner of life, in 13 love, in faith, in purity. Till I come, give heed to reading, to exhortation, to teaching. 14 Neglect not the gift that is in thee, which was given thee by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the pres15 bytery.
