THE report of this discovery had made its way to Egypt, where I had the honour to serve my country as consul; with many volumes and cases, long abandoned by the ordinary resources of medicine, cured by the simple influence of magnetism. It was on all hands admitted that such an influence did exist. I read also of a thousand ridiculous effects produced by the same cause. But the world were more inclined to revolt from the danger it seemed to embrace in its powers, than to favour, or confide in any of its good effects. It was sufficient, however, for my judgment upon the case, that remarkable effects were acknowledged to have been produced. Whether good effects, or bad effects, they afforded incontestable evidence of the existence of a secret power, within the reach and adoption of man to produce those effects; and not to be rejected with levity nor without consideration.
