individual differences. The first of these is the wide variation among pupils of the same grade with regard to the amount of voluntary reading done. The second is the close correspondence (1) between the boys and girls of the same grade, and (2) between the different grades.

Some of the data which should be considered cannot be tabulated. For example, some of the answers given by the pupils are significant. Some say they have no idea how many books they have read. One boy in the seventh grade says that his mother limits him to three books a week. Others say, "I read everything I can get my hands on." There are many negative answers, as "I have read very few books because my parents do not allow me to read at home." "I started three books this year." "I have read few books because I like magazine stories better." A frequent answer from girls in the high school is that their school work takes so much of their time that they are able to do very little reading except what is assigned. A few answered that they read nothing while school was in session, but read considerable during vacations.
