The old book of Polydore Vergil, "De Rerum Inventoribus," Amsterdam, 1671, from the Elzevir press, 12mo, is curious. Dutens's Recherches sur l'Origine des Découvertes attribuées aux Modernes, Paris, 1812, 2 vols. 8vo, is interesting. Bailly's "Essai sur l'Origine des Sciences," 2 vols. 8vo, Paris, is a learned and ingenious body of conjectures.

Encyclopædia Britannica; or, a Dictionary of Arts, Sciences, and Miscellaneous Literature. Edinburgh, 1815-17. 20 vols. 4to, 5th edition.

To complete this, the six volumes of supplement, published at Edinburgh, 1824, 4to, are necessary; but, no doubt, are included in the next article.

:

The same, republished. Edinburgh, 1830. 4to. Vols. I. to XI. To be completed.

To the supplement, already mentioned, are prefixed dissertations: by Dugald Stuart, on the Progress of Ethical and Metaphysical Science; by Playfair, on the History of Mathematics, &c.; and, by Brande, on the History of Chymistry. The book, in its original form (Edinburgh, 1771, 3 vols. 4to), is said to have been compiled by James Tytler, at a salary of 16 shillings per week. It has risen to its present size by repeated additions, of which the French one of Diderot furnished the main matter.

This forms a companion to his Ancient History; of which, in the French editions, it forms a part. It has, however, been omitted from most of the English editions, and from all the American ones except the late one from the press of the Messrs. Harpers. It forms a survey of ancient literature, as well as art, technical and ornamental. In the first respect see, however, the later books mentioned under LITERARY HISTORY.

Young's many agricultural works did a great deal for the advancement of scientific husbandry. Among them, the chief are his several agricultural surveys of

Suffolk, London, 1797, 8vo; of Lincoln, London, 1799, 8vo; of Hertfordshire, London, 1804, 8vo; of Norfolk, same date and form; of Essex, London, 1806, 7, 8vo; of Oxfordshire, 1808, 8vo; of Sussex, same date and form. His several tours through various districts of England and Ireland; his agricultural travels in France (Bury St. Edmunds, 1794, 2 vols. 4to); his Farmer's Letters (London, 1768-71, 2 vols. 8vo); the annals of agriculture, conducted by him (Bury St. Edmunds, 1790-1804, 40 vols. 8vo); and his Farmer's Calendar (London, 1812, 4 vols. 8vo), are all much esteemed. The books of Sir John Sinclair were, about the same time, conferring the same benefits on Scotland. Young's books contain also much useful information on matters of population, manufactures, &c.
