men, but with God elect, 'precious, ye also, as living 5 stones, are built up a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices, acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. Because it is contained 6 in scripture,

3

Behold, I lay in Zion a chief corner stone, elect, 'precious:

And he that believeth on him shall not be put to shame.

For you therefore who believe is the preciousness: 7 but for such as disbelieve,

and,

The stone which the builders rejected,

The same was made the head of the corner;

A stone of stumbling, and a rock of offence; "for they stumble at the word, being disobedient: whereunto also they were appointed. But ye are an 9 elect race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God's own possession, that ye may shew forth the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: who in time past were no 10 people, but now are the people of God: who had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

Beloved, I beseech you as sojourners and pilgrims, 11 to abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul; having your behaviour seemly among the Gen- 12 tiles; that, wherein they speak against you as evildoers, they may by your good works, which they behold, glorify God in the day of visitation.

For hereunto were ye called: Gr. grace. because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an 22 example, that ye should follow his steps: who did no 23 sin, neither was guile found in his mouth: who, when he was reviled, reviled not again; when he suffered, threatened not; but committed himself to him that 2Or, his 24 judgeth righteously: who his own self bare our sins 3 Or, carried in his body upon the tree, that we, having died up... to unto sins, might live unto righteousness; by whose the tree 25 stripes ye were healed. For after this manner aforetime the holy women also, who hoped in God, adorned themselves, being in subjection to their 6 husbands: as Sarah obeyed Abraham, calling him lord whose children ye now are, if ye do well, are not put in fear by any terror.

But the face of the Lord is upon them that do evil. And who is he that will harm you, if ye be zealous 13 of that which is good? But and if ye should suffer 14 for righteousness' sake, blessed are ye: and fear not their fear, neither be troubled; but sanctify in your 15. hearts Christ as Lord: being ready always to give answer to every man that asketh you a reason concerning the hope that is in you, yet with meekness and fear: having a good conscience; that, wherein ye 16 are spoken against, they may be put to shame who revile your good manner of life in Christ. For it is 17 better, if the will of God should so will, that for well-doing than for evil-doing. Because Christ 18 also 'suffered for sins once, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God; being put to death in the flesh, but quickened in the spirit; in 19 which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison, who aforetime were disobedient, when the 20 longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, that is, eight eight souls, were saved through water: which also 21 after a true likeness doth now save you, even baptism, not the putting away of the filth of the flesh, but the *interrogation of a good conscience toward God, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ; who is on 22 the right hand of God, having gone into heaven; angels and authorities and powers being made subject unto him.

Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery ages of the trial among you, which cometh upon you to prove you, 13 as though a strange thing happened unto you: but insomuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings, rejoice; that at the revelation of his glory also ye 14 may rejoice with exceeding joy. For

the time is come for judgement to begin at the house of God: and if it begin first at us, what shall be the end 18 of them that obey not the gospel of God? And if the righteous is scarcely saved, where shall the ungodly 19 and sinner appear? Wherefore let them also that suffer according to the will of God commit their souls in well-doing unto a faithful Creator.
