CLASSES OF PASSAGES.

I. Insert "S." (i.e. Saint) in the title of the Gospels, and in the heading of the pages. II. Insert "the Apostle" in the title of the Pauline Epistles (except Galatians, Titus, and Philemon), and "of Paul the Apostle" in the title of the Epistle to the Hebrews; insert the word "General" in the title of the Epistles of James, Peter, 1 John, and Jude; and let the title of the Revelation run "The Revelation of S. John the Divine."

III. For "Holy Spirit" (occurring more than 90 times) substitute "Holy Ghost" with marg. "Holy Spirit' except in Matt. xii. 32; Mark iii. 29; xii. 36; Luke ii. 25, 26; iv. 1; x. 21; xi. 13; xii. 10, 12; John i. 33; vii. 39 marg.; xiv. 26; Acts ii. 4; vi. 5; 1 Cor. xii. 3; Eph. i. 13; iv. 30; 1 Thess. iv. 8; Jude 20.

In Luke xi. 13; Eph. i. 13; iv. 30; 1 Thess. iv. 8" Holy Spirit" is the rendering of the Authorized Version, as it is in the Old Testament (Ps. li. 11; Is. lxiii. 10, 11).

IV. Put into the text uniformly "by" in place of "through" when it relates to prophecy, viz. in Matt. ii. 5, 17, 23; iii. 3; iv. 14; viii. 17; xii. 17; xiii. 35; xxi. 4; xxiv. 15; xxvii. 9; Luke xviii. 31; Acts ii. 16; xxviii. 25. And put "Ór, through" in the margin.

V. For "try" or "make trial of" ("trial "), where enticement to what is wrong is not meant, substitute "tempt" ("temptation"); viz. in the following instances: Matt. iv. 7; xvi. Î; xix. 3; xxii. 18, 35; Mark viii. 11; x. 2; xii. 15; Luke iv. 12; x. 25; xi. 16; xxii. 28; John viii. 6; Acts v. 9; xv. 10; 1 Cor. x. 9; Heb. iii. 8, 9; 1 Pet. i. 6.

VI. For modern forms of speech substitute the following archaisms:

(1) For "are" substitute "be" in Matt. vii. 13, 14; xvi. 28; Mark vii. 4; ix. 1; Luke ix. 27; xiii. 23; xx. 6; John viii. 33; Acts xix. 26; Rom. iii. 8; 1 Cor. iv. 17; viii. 5; 2 Cor. i. 6 (twice), 20; xiii. 5 (twice); Gal. iii. 7, 9; Phil. iii. 15; 1 Thess. v. 7; Heb. v. 12 marg. 4

(2) For "drag" in Luke xii. 58 substitute "hale", and for "dragging away" in Acts viii. 3 substitute "haling".

(3) For "know" in Acts iii. 17; vii. 40; Rom. xi. 2; Phil. i. 22 (text and marg.) substitute "wot". And for "knew" in Mark ix. 6; xiv. 40; Luke ii. 49; John v. 13; Acts xii. 9; xxiii. 5 substitute "wist".

(4) In many passages, too numerous to specify, substitute "which" for 66 'who" or "that" when used of persons.

VII. For "demon" ("demons") representing daíuwv, daμóviov (occurring 62 times) substitute "devil" ("devils"); for "possessed ("vexed") with a demon" ("demons") representing daμoviSoua (occurring 13 times) substitute "possessed (vexed") with a devil" ("devils"); and add marg. "Gr. demon". or "Gr. demons".

VIII. After "baptize" let "in" in the text and "with" in the margin exchange
places in Matt. iii. 11 (twice); Mark i. 8 (twice); Luke iii. 16; John i.
26, 31, 33 (twice); Acts i. 5; xi. 16.

IX. In seventeen (of more than thirty) instances in which "covenant" occurs
put"testament" as an alternate in the margin: viz. in Matt. xxvi. 28;
Mark xiv. 24; Luke xxii. 20; 1 Cor. xi. 25; 2 Cor. iii. 6, 14; Gal. iii. 15, 17;

XII. Omit "Or, God and the Father" as marginal alternate of "the God and
