VI. Under the gospel, when Christ the substance n was exhibited, the ordinances in which this covenant is dispensed are the preaching of the word, and the administration of the facraments of baptifm and the Lord's suppero, which though fewer in number, and administred with more fimplicity, and less outward glory; yet in them it is held forth in more fulness, evidence and spiritual efficacyp, to all nations, both Jews are bleffed with faithful Abraham. v. 24. That the bleffing of Abraham might come on the Gentiles thro' Jetus Chrift; that we might receive the promise of the Spirit through faith. VI. Col. ii. 17. Which are a shadow of things to come; but the body is of Chrift. • Mat. xxviii. 19. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the holy Ghost: v. 20. Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you, alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen. I Cor. xi. 23. For I have received of the Lord, that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus, the fame night in which he was betrayed, took bread: v. 24. And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and faid, Take, eat; this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me. v. 25. After the fame manner also he took the cup, when he had fupped, saying, this cup is the new teftament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me. p Heb. xii. 22. But ye are come unto motunt Sion, and unto the city of the living God, the heavenly Jerufalem, and to an innumerable company of angels. v. 23. To the general affembly and church of the first born, which are written in heaven, and to God the judge of all, and to the spirits of just men made perfect, v. 24. and to Jesus the Mediator of the new covenant, and to the blood of sprinkling, that speaketh better things than that of Abel. v. 25. See that ye refuse not him that speaketh: for if they escaped not who refused him that spake on earth, much more shall not we escape, if we turn away from him that speaketh from heaven. v. 26. Whose voice then shook the earth: but now he hath promised, faying, Yet once more I thake not the earth only, but also heaven. v. 27. And this word, Yet once more, fignifieth the removing of those things that are fhaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be fhaken may remain. Jer. xxxi. 33. But this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Ifrael, after those days, faith the Lord, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts, and will be their God, and they shall be my people. v. 34. And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, faying, Know the Lord; for they fhall all know me, from the least of them, unto the greatest of them, faith the Lord: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their fin no more. • Mat. Jews and Gentilesq; and is called the New Testament r. There are not therefore two covenants of grace differing in fabstance, but one and the fame under various dispensations/. IT CHAP. VIII. Of Christ the Mediator. T pleased God, in his eternal purpose, to choose and ordain the LORD JESUS, his only begotten Son, to be the the Mediator between God and man a; the prophet b, priest c, and king d; the head and Saviour of his churche; the heir of all thingsf, and judge of the worldg: unto whom he did from all eternity give a people to be his feed b, and to be by him in time redeemed, called, justified, sanctified and glorifiedi. im Mat. xxviii. 19. (See letter o mediately foregoing.) Eph. ii. 15. Having abolished in his flesh the enmity, even the law of commandments, contained in ordinances, for to make in himself of twain, one new man, fo making peace; v. 16. and that he might reconcile both unto God in one body by the cross, having flain the enmity thereby; v. 17. and came, and preached peace to you which were afar off, and to them that were nigh. v. 18. For through him we both have an access by one Spirit unto the Father. V. 19. Now therefore ye are no more ftrangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the faints, and of the houshold of God. Luke xxii. 20. Likewise also the cup after supper, saying, This cup is the new teftament in my blood, which is shed for you. Gal. iii. 14. He faith not, And to feeds, as of many; but as of one, And to thy feed, which is Christ. Acts xv. 11. But we believe, that through the grace of the Lord Jefus Christ, we shall be saved, even as they. Rom. iii. 21. But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets. v. 22. Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all, and upon all them that believe; for there is no difference: v. 13. For all have finned, and come short of the glory of God; v. 30. Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcifion by faith, and uncircumcifion through faith. Pfalm xxxii. 1. Blessed is he whose tranfgreffion is forgiven, whose fin is covered. With Rom. iv. 3. For what faith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness. v. 6. Even as David also defcribeth the blessedness of the man unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works. v. 16. Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace, to the end the promise might be fure to all the feed, not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham, who is the father of us all. v. 17. (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not, as though they were. v. 23. Now it was not written for his fake alone, that it was imputed to him; v. 24. but for us also to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead. Heb. xiii. 8. Jesus Chrift the J fame II. The Son of God, the second person in the Trinity, being very and eternal God, of one substance and equal with the fame yesterday, and to-day, and for ever. I a Ifa. xlii. 1. Behold my fervant whom I uphold, mine elect, in whom my foul delighteth: I have put my spirit upon him, he shall bring forth judgment to the Gentiles. I Pet. i. 19. But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot: v. 20. Who verily was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you. John iii. 16. For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him, should not perish, but have everlasting life. 1 Tim. ii. 5. For there is one God, and one Mediator between God and man, the man Chrift Jefus. •b Acts iii. 22. For Mofes truly faid unto the fathers, A prophet shall the Lord your God raise up unto you, of your brethren, like unto me; him shall ye hear in all things whatsoever he shall fay unto you. c Heb. v. 5. So also Christ glorified not himself, to be made an high priest: but he that faid unto him, Thou art my Son, to day have I begotten thee. v. 6. As he faith alfo in another place, Thou art a priest for ever after the order of Melchifedec. d Pfal. ii. 6. Yet have I set my King upon my holy hill of Zion. Luke i. 33. And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever, and of his kingdom there shall be no end. e Eph. v. 23. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the Saviour of the body. fHeb. i. 2. Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds. • Acts xvii. 21. Because he hath appointed a day in the which he will judge the world in righteousness, by that man whom he hath ordained, whereof he hath given assurance unto all men, in that he hath raised him from the dead. b John xvii. 6. I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word. Pfal. xxii. 30. A feed shall ferve him, it shall be accounted to the Lord for a generation. Ifa. liii. 10. Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise him, he hath put him to grief: when thou shalt make his foul an offering for sin, he shall fee his feed, he shall prolong his days, and the pleasure of the Lord shall profper in his hand. i1 Tim. ii. 6. Who gave himfelf a ransom for all, to be testified in due time. Ifa. lv. 4. Behold, I have given him for a witness to the people, a leader and commander to the people. v. 5. Behold, thou shalt call 1 the Father, did, when the fulness of time was come, take upon him man's naturek, with all the essential properties and common infirmities thereof, yet without fin/: being conceived by the power of the holy Ghost, in the womb of the Virgin Mary, of her substancem. So that two whole, perfect and distinct natures, the Godhead and the manhood, were inseparably joined together in one person, without converfion, composition or confusionn. Which person is very God, call a nation that thou knowest not, and nations that knew not thee shall run unto thee, because of the Lord thy God, and for the holy One of Ifrael; for he hath glorified thee. 1 Cor. i. 30. But of him are ye in Christ Jefus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and fanctification, and redemption. II. John i. 1. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. ▼. 14. And the Word was made flesh, and dwelt among us, (and we beheld his glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father) full of grace and truth. 1 John v. 20. And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an underftanding, that we may know him that is true: and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life. Phil. ii. 6. Who being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God. Gal. iv. 4. But when the fulness of the time was come, God fent forth his Son made of a woman, made under the law. 1 Heb. ii. 14. Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the fame, that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, and the devil. v. 16. For verily he took not on him the nature of angels; but he took on him the feed of Abraham. v. 17. Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be made like unto his brethren; that he might be a merciful and faithful high priest, in things pertaining to God; to make reconciliation for the fins of the people. Heb. iv. 15. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without fin. m Luke i. 27. To a virgin espoufed to a man whose name was Jofeph, of the house of David; and the virgins name was Mary. v. 31. And behold thou shalt conceive in thy womb, and bring forth a Son, and shalt call his name Jefus. v. 35. And the angel answered, and faid unto her, The holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee; therefore also that holy thing which shall be born of thee, shall be called the Son of God. Gal. iv 4. (See letterk immediately foregoing.) " Luke i. 35. (See the foregoing Verse.) Col. ii. 9. For in him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily. Rom. ix 5. Whose are the fathers, and of whom as concerning the flesh, Christ came, who is over all, : and very man, yet one Christ, the only Mediator between God and man 0. III. The Lord Jesus, in his human nature thus united to the divine, was sanctified and anointed with the holy Spirit above measurep; having in him all the treasures of wisdom and knowledgeq; in whom it pleased the Father that all fulness should dwellr: to the end, that being holy, harmless, undefiled, and full of grace and truths, he might be thorowly furnished to execute the office of a Mediator and furety t. Which office he took not unto himself, but was thereunto called by his Father, who put all power and judgment into his all, God blessed for ever. Amen. 1 Pet. iii. 18. For Christ also hath once fuffered for fins, the just for the unjust (that he might bring us to God) being put to death in the flesh, but quickned by the Spirit. 1 Tim. iii. 16. And without controversy, great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angels, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory. • Rom. i. 3. Concerning his Son Jefus Christ our Lord, which was made of the feed of David, according to the flesh: v. 4. And declared to be the Son of God with power, according to the Spirit of holiness, by the refurrection from the dead. 1 Tim. ii. 5. Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest wickedness: therefore God, thy God hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows. John iii. 34.
