But fince his pleasing, fatal lot,
The jocund dance with you to fhare,
His friends, his fports are all forgot;
Ah! why was he fo rafh, or you fo fair!

Oft, till the evening's dew-drops fall,
In am'rous floth of you he dreams;
Deaf to the loud accuftom'd call,

Nor bathes in healthful BUXTON's tepid ftreams.

How have we feen him brufh the dew,

To vifit yonder murmuring rill?

But now unnerv'd, undone by you,

No more he climbs the fteep MANCESTRIAN hill.

In vain the chearful horn invites On fwifteft fteed to sweep the plains;

Ah me! fays he, thefe, once delights,

Now charm no more! Go, go, ye happier fwains

This morn I forc'd him down again Bleft ANNA, to thy facred well;

Thrice he effay'd to drink; in vain !
He figh'd; and from his hand the veflel fell.

See, to the living taper's light, When all their ev'ning sports pursue,

Penfive he writes, or feems to write,

But oh his looks, his thoughts, are all on you.

Ev'n when the sprightly tabors tell
That crowds, enraptur'd, beat the ground;
Mindful too late how once he fell,
Sad fugitive, he cannot bear the found:

So from his cell, the Grecian chief
The trumpet's clarion ne'er could move:
Pleas'd to the woods to tell his grief,
The warrior, and the man, both loft in love.

To the EDITOR of the St. JAMES's MAGAZINE.

SIR,

IN looking over fome papers, I met with the fol

lowing, which, I apprehend, has never appeared in print. If it is any ways fuitable to your purpose, your inferting it will much oblige,

Eflecting, with abundance of concern, on the

almost universal averfion our students have tò a clofe application to the univerfities, and recollecting at the fame time, their immenfe diligence and propensity to all kinds of outward refinements, particularly their affiduity in becoming mafters of that no lefs fuccessful than ufeful help to difcourfe, the SNUFF-BOX; I was willing (though an utter enemy to new projects) ta throw a larger quantity of the Utile into the composition. This fucceeded to my wish.

Your readers will be furpriz'd, when I tell them, by you, that I have not only prepared fnuff proper for candidates in the three celebrated profeffions here; but (quid non labor improbus?) for the inferioris fubfellii Doctores, and Ladies, INERIGUING, TALKATIVE, SCANDALIZING, STORY-TELLING, PUNNING, QUIBBLING, CONUNDRUMMICAL SNUFF, &c. all which are infallible in their operations. But as this affertion may look like a rant, and I be judged an impoftor,

impoftor, I shall be so much a friend to the PUBLIC, as (neglecting the low confideration of my private interest) to give them a few fpecimens of my ingredients, and their effects.

SNUFF-LOGICAL,

is compounded of ARISTOTLE'S ORGANON, RAMUS, OZELL's Art of Thinking, BURGERSDICIUS, and HEREBOORD, of each, quantum fuff. thefe pulveriz'd, fecundum artem, make an infallible CATHOLICON, which, taken up the nofe, fo far exhauft, or imbibe all relicks of wit, fenfe and humour (thofe grand enemies to fcholaftic difputations) that the patient commences a finished dry-headed fellow, without the leaft lofs of time in ftudy, or application to a tutor. Thousands can atteft the truth of this from my, private practise- -quos nunc prefcribere longum

SNUFF CRITICAL,

is of two forts; one for those who write to fhew their own learning: the other for those who really illuftrate the authors they undertake.

Ingredients for the first kind are almost innumerable, and fo remarkably fimple is the compofition, that any one of the Greek scholiafts, or Latin variorum, is fufficient. Some have advis'd the use of BENTLEY, as being drier, and confequently pulveriz'd with the greater facility, but I found him knotty in the experiment, reduced to powder, and a caput mortuum at the fame time, fo unfit for use.

The latter is a very fcarce commodity, very few befides EUSTATHIUS, ADDISON and HURD, being effectualfo have prepared but a fmall quantity.

My POETICAL CEPHALIC, proper for amorous and intriguing perfons of both fexes, is a compound of CATULLUS, TIBULLUS, &c. all OVID, part of

ANA

ANACREON, LORD ROCHESTER, cùm multis aliis; having fuch plenty of materials, this might be allowed very cheap, but by the extraordinary demand for it, I am oblig'd to keep up the price, left it fhould grow out of fashion.

For my TALKATIVE OF CONFABULATIC POWDER, recipe Spanish and French novels of all forts. TOM THUMB, LANCASHIRE WITCHES, GUY EARL OF WARWICK, LONG MEG OF WESTMINSTER, &c. &c. &c. &c. &c. N. B. I recommend the laft in particular to old people, and the ladies, it having to innocent a flavour, that they may be good company, and genteel at the fame time, without being incommoded with laughter, or even fo much as a faeer.

N. B. The Hum-drum club make ufe of nothing elfe...

For the Facetious and Rifible, I have prepared from ARCHEE, CAMBRIDGE, OXFORD, LONDON, and IRISH Jefts, MERRY BULLS, PILLS TO PURGE MES LANCHOLY, &c. &e. &c. a powder of fuch exquifite flavour, that it never fails of raifing a titillation in the SENSORIUM, which, diffufing itself through the muscles of the face, ever causes an univerfal laughter, or ef chinnation, always provided that it be taken immediately after the purchase.

I have alfo a SUFFIMENTUM PUNNICUM extracted from SHAKESPEARE, BISHOP ANDREWS, LATIMER, SOUTH'S Sermons, SWIFT's Art of Punning, and DUPORT'S MUSE SUBSCISIVE. This I humbly recommend to the Frefhmen and Sophomores in our univerfities.

For Tragic Writers I have the very quinteffence of LEE, DRYDEN, BUSIRIS and HURLOTĦRUMBO. For the infallibility whereof I dare rifque my reputation, it never having been known once to fail of giving the poffeffor fuch a poetical turn as the Latins call VERTIGO and the Greeks OESTRUM.

In bonum publicum, or pro bono publico (as the critics and Mr. ASHLEY fhall determine) of our fellowcommoners here and rural fquires, whose tongues must outrun their wit, or the innocent animals fit dumbfounded; I have prepared an oily powder of fuch a wonderful nature, that it not only fuccessfully fills all the chinks and vacuities in the PERICRANIUM, and thereby fecures them from the inclemencies of the air, but admirably supplies all defects of the brain, and gives á furprizing felf-pleafing volubility to the organs of speech, making its takers fhine in the most agreeable SMUT, newest fashioned oaths, and delicate witticisms on every one who has the misfortune to be born to half an acre of land less than themselves.

As these gentlemen are very humorous, I juftly forbear mentioning the ingredients, esteeming it my ne plus ultra befides being given to the fneer or horfelaugh, 1 would not give occafion to their ridicule; must therefore only defire them (with my predeceffor fir WILLIAM REED, of empiric memory) to

READ, judge and try,
And if I lye,

Never believe me more.

The preceding fpecimens will I hope be fufficient to evince my abilities for the undertaking: nor need I trouble your readers with any more of the theory, but conclude with an earneft exhortation to the practice: being juftly confident (from my private operations of this nature) that they will apply to me that burthen of an old fong.

Nor GALEN, nor HIPPOCRATES,
Could ever boaft fuch cures as these;
