TO THE READER

AS I Highly APPROVE of the following ADVICE;

An Idle lue by all means shun, However great thy Incomes are;
Thousands have thereby been undone, For 'tis the devils surest snare
Fly lustfull loath, and ever find, work for thy body or thy mind.
And as,
'Side from the giddy worlds Infectious STRIFE,

My Serious moments teaches me to Stray;

And in the 'lone sequester'd Vale of Life,

To strive to keep within the narrow way. And, as I have a considerable portion of spare time in the sum me. season? A great part of which I wish to spend to good pur pose; and being o. opinion I have a Library of the best of Books, wrote by some of the most Pious, Devinely Enlightened, and truly wise Men, that this and neighbouring nations have gave birth to, during the two last Centuries? And not knowing how it may be prised, how used, p. what done with after my death! (having no Family) And thinking ections from such Sound and wholesome DOCTRINE and ADVICE, as it contains, might be usefull if made publick? And haveing the means within myself, (having purchased Type and a Printing Press, to print my own wrapper Bills); I think I cannot better employ my leasure hours, than in selecting & printing from it, such peices as appears to me to be inost in structive convinceing, edifying, and best adapted to these times, and make them up into pamphlets, & give them away at the different tow as where I do business. I feel myself highly favoured, & am deep ly impressed with gratitude to the Supreme being, for his long pa tience, and forbareance, with such an unworthy wanderer as I have been; and am filled with shame, self-abhorrence, and confusion of face, when I consider his great Mercy and goodness, seeing his hand in all that I am and have?, And I sincerely hope, the rema ining part of my Life will be spent more to his honor.

bone my readers will excuse the badness of the print, and the ma any mistakes thay may find, as the art was quite novel to me? and taken up on my own account, and upon my own judgment, without instructions; The press too was of an inferior sort, and not calculated to do work well. I have now purchased a better, and the last part is better worked off. The first piece was chosen on account of the good advice therein contained, to the tumultuous, and disaffected so abundant in our day, it contains also many weighty things, and much good advice to all. The 2d. and 3d pieces, I consider well worth the serious perusal of people of all professions! as in them the TRUE and the FALCEn religion, are nicely distinguished. The Auther of the 1st & 2d, observes, that by the words TRUE-RELIGION, he means, a living Divine principle, in the mind of man? or the rege nerating transtorming Power, or Spirit of God. The Piece on hu mane Learning, is wrote to such, as consider it Absolutely necessa ry to the understanding and explaining, the Mysteries of the gospel

A GRATEFULL HYMN.

WHAT WORDS JEHOVA; shall I chuse
T express my Thanks to Tace?
What reverential Posture use,
Down on my Face or Knee:

External Forms may seem devout,
Yet no Acceptance find?
Nor all the Poup of Words, without
A correspondant Mind.

The Heart,s thy Index; read me there.
See Gratitude and Praise;
Repentance True Desires Sincere
Henceforth to Tread thy Ways

Thy Bountious and dost thou enlarge
And what is dearer still,)
Thy Love doth old Arears Discharge,
Such is thy Holy Wil.

Shall I O God thus highly blest
Eer Disobedient prove,
Or mak Revealed Truths a jest,
And Sceptick Reas'ning love?

Shall I continue still in Sin,
Renounce Toy sacred Laws,
And slight thy Holy Checks within,
To gain the Worlds Applause;

No; rather, let my Hand forget.
To guide the passive Quill,
My Eyes in total Darkness set
My la bring Heart stand still.

But on thy Aid must I Rely
So frail Myself I see,
help me Day by Day to Die,
That thou mag Live IN ME
