For these prizes there were fiftyfour competitors; and the successful Essays were published in the course of the same year.

At the commencement of the present year (1859), the same gentleman offered prizes to the same amount for the best Essays on "Man's Duty to his Neighbour," to be Written by Members of the same Class. For these prizes there were fifty-six competitors, and the Eleven Essays comprised in the present volume are those to which the adjudicators awarded the prizes.
