A MEMOIR of Mr. JOHN CROOK,

IOGRAPHY is a fpecies of compofition peculiarly interefting, especially when the fubjects of it have been religious, wife, and ufeful. These then become models for imitation, and their manner of conducting themselves in the various departments of life, which they filled, affords a leffon of wisdom to those who are defirous of inftruction. But among the lives of such characters, thofe of Minifters of the Gospel who long contended with adverfity, without being fubdued by it, and whofe faithful labours contributed much towards the fpread of pure and undefiled religion, hold a diftinguished place. Of this defcription was Mr. John Crook, the fubject of the following

memoir.

Custom having rendered it almoft indifpenfable to give some account of the parentage of those who become fubjects of biography, a few particulars concerning Mr. Crook's father and mother may reafonably be expected. And glad would we be to be able to record, with truth, that their conduct was fuch as to merit approbation. But, alas! the cafe was otherwife. Mr. Crook's father was a phyfician by profeffion, and fole heir to Shaw-Hall Eftate, in Lancashire. From this eftate, it being his mother's jointure, he could reap no advantage during her life. Finding his prefent resources inadequate to fupport his extravagant mode of living, he fold the estate in question, which on the demife of his mother, came into the hands of the purchaser. His wife, Mr. John Crook's mother, was a woman of family and fortune, but, like too many of that description, the devoted her
