GEM XIV.

THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD.

PSALM XXIII.

A Psalm of David.

1 The Lord is my shepherd;

2

I shall not want.

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures:
He leadeth me beside the still waters.

3 He restoreth my soul:

He leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake.

4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,

I will fear no evil:

For thou art with me;

Thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies;

6

Thou anointest my head with oil;
My cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all
the days of my life:

And I will dwell in the house of the Lord for

ever.

Come unto me all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me: for I am meek and

lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.-Matthew xi, 28-30.

THE GOOD SAMARITAN.

LUKE X.

And behold, a certain lawyer stood up and tempted him, saying, Master, what shall 26 I do to inherit eternal life? And he said unto him, What is written in the law? how 27 readest thou? And he answering said, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy strength, and with all thy mind; and thy 28 neighbour as thyself. And he said unto him,

Thou hast answered right: this do, and thou 29 shalt live. But he, desiring to justify himself,

said unto Jesus, And who is my neighbour? 30 Jesus made answer and said, A certain man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho; and he fell among robbers, which both stripped him and beat him, and departed, leaving 31 him half dead. And by chance a certain priest was going down that way: and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 And in like manner a Levite also, when he

came to the place, and saw him, passed by on 33 the other side. But a certain Samaritan, as he journeyed, came where he was: and when he saw him he was moved with compassion, 34 and came to him, and bound up his wounds, pouring on them oil and wine; and he set him on his own beast, and brought him to an inn, 35 and took care of him. And on the morrow

he took out two pence, and gave them to the host, and said, Take care of him; and whatsoever thou spendest more, I, when I come 36 back again, will repay thee. Which of these three, thinkest thou, proved neighbour unto 37 him that fell among the robbers? And he said, He that shewed mercy on him. And Jesus said unto him, Go, and do thou likewise.

For with the heart man believeth unto righteousness; and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.-Romans x, 10.

CONFESSION.

PSALM LI.

A Psalm of David.

1 Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy loving kindness:

[ocr errors]

According unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.

2 Wash me thoroughly from mine iniquity, and

3

cleanse me from my sin.

For I acknowledge my transgressions:
And my sin is ever before me.

4 Against thee, thee only, have I sinned,
And done this evil in thy sight:

That thou mightest be justified when thou speakest,

And be clear when thou judgest.

5 Behold, I was shapen in iniquity;
And in sin did my mother conceive me.

6

Behold thou desirest truth in the inward parts: And in the hidden part thou shalt make me to know wisdom.

7 Purge me with hissop, and I shall be clean: Wash me, and I shall be whiter than snow.

8

Make me to hear joy and gladness;

That the bones which thou hast broken may rejoice.

9 Hide thy face from my sins, And blot out all mine iniquities.

10

Create in me a clean heart, O God; And renew a right spirit within me. 11 Cast me not away from thy presence; And take not thy Holy Spirit from me.

12

Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation, And uphold me with thy free Spirit. 13 Then will I teach transgressors thy ways; And sinners shall be converted unto thee. Deliver me from bloodguiltiness, O God, thou God of my salvation;

COMFORT FOR THE TROUBLED SOUL.

29

And my tongue shall sing aloud of thy right

eousness.

15 O Lord, open thou my lips;

16

And my mouth shall shew forth thy praise.

For thou desirest not sacrifice; else would I give it:

Thou delightest not in burnt offerings.

17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit:

A broken and a contrite heart, O God, thou wilt not despise.

18 Do good in thy good pleasure unto Zion: Build thou the walls of Jerusalem.

19 Then shalt thou be pleased with the sacrifices of righteousness,

With burnt offering and whole burnt offering:
Then shall they offer bullocks upon thine altar.

COMFORT FOR THE TROUBLED SOUL.

JOHN XIV.

Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe 2 in God, believe also in me. In my Father's house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you; for I go to prepare a 3 place for you. And if I go and prepare a
