heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, 5 or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth gene6 ration of them that hate me: And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me, and keep my commandments.

Thou shalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain: for the Lord will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.

Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy 10 work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy 11 gates: For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.

Thou shalt not kill.

14 Thou shalt not commit adultery.

15 16

Thou shalt not steal.

Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.

17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is thy neighbour's.

And all the people saw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noise of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people saw it, they removed, and 19 stood afar off. And they said unto Moses, Speak thou with us, and we will hear: but 20 let not God speak with us, lest we die. And

Moses said unto the people, Fear not: for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may 21 be before your faces, that ye sin not. And the people stood afar off, and Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.

22

And the Lord said unto Moses, Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel, Ye have seen that I have talked with you from heaven. 23 Ye shall not make with me gods of silver, neither shall ye make unto you gods of gold. An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice thereon thy burnt offer ings, and thy peace offerings, thy sheep, and

thine oxen: in all places where I record my name I will come unto thee, and I will bless 25 thee. And if thou wilt make me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stone: for if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast 26 polluted it. Neither shalt thou go up by steps unto mine altar, that thy nakedness be not discovered thereon.

GEM. III.

He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, even his prayers shall be abomination. -Proverbs xxviii, 9.

GEM IV.

THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT.
MATTHEW V, VI, VII.

5 And seeing the multitudes, he went up into the mountain: and when he had sat down, 2 his disciples came unto him: and he opened his mouth and taught them, saying,

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted.

Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.

Blessed are they that hunger and thirst

after righteousness: for they shall be filled. Blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy.

Blessed are the pure in heart: for they shall see God.

Blessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called sons of God.

Blessed are they that have been persecuted for righteousness' sake: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

Blessed are ye when men shall reproach you, and persecute you, and say all manner of evil against you falsely, for my sake.

Rejoice, and be exceeding glad: for great is your reward in heaven: for so persecuted they the prophets which were before you. Ye are the salt of the earth: but if the salt have lost its savour, wherewith shall it be salted? it is thenceforth good for nothing, but to be cast out and trodden under foot 14 of men. Ye are the light of the world. A 15 city set on a hill cannot be hid. Neither do

men light a lamp, and put it under a bushel, but on the stand; and it shineth unto all that 16 are in the house. Even so let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.

Think not that I came to destroy the law or the prophets: I came not to destroy but to 18 fulfil. For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or tittle shall in no wise pass away from the law, till all things 19 be accomplished. Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, shall be called least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, he shall be called great 20 in the kingdom of heaven. For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no wise enter the kingdom of heaven.

Ye have heard that it was said to them of old time, Thou shalt not kill: and whosoever shall kill shall be in danger of the judge. 22 ment: but I say unto you, That every one who is angry with his brother shall be in danger of the judgement; and whosoever shall say to his brother, Raca, shall be in danger of the council; and whosoever shall say, Thou fool, shall be in danger of the hell 23 of fire. If therefore thou art offering thy gift at the altar, and there rememberest that thy 24 brother hath aught against thee, leave there thy gift before the altar, and go thy way,
