And when they had sung a hymn, they went out to the 27 Mount of Olives. And Jesus saith unto them; 'All ye ' will stumble because of me this night; for it is written; I will smite the shepherd, and the sheep will be scat'tered. But after I am risen I will go before you into 'Galilee.' And Peter said unto him; And if all men 'shall stumble, yet will not I.' And Jesus saith unto him; Verily I say unto thee, that thou, to day in this night, 31 before the cock crow twice, wilt deny me thrice.' But

he said the more strongly; 'If I must die with thee, I 'will not deny thee.' And in like wise said they all.

And they come to a place named Gethsemane; and he 33 saith to his disciples; Sit ye here while I pray.' And he taketh with him Peter and James and John, and began 34 to be sore amazed and to be very heavy. And he saith

unto them; 'My soul is very sorrowful even unto death; 35 'tarry ye here and watch.' And he went a little further, and fell on the ground; and prayed, that if it were possible the hour might pass from him. And he said; ‘Abba, 'Father, all things are possible unto thee; take this cup 'from me. Nevertheless, not what I will, but what thou 37 'wilt.' And he cometh, and findeth them sleeping; and saith unto Peter; 'Simon, sleepest thou? hadst thou not 38 'strength to watch one hour? Watch ye, and pray that 'ye enter not into temptation. The spirit indeed is 39 willing, but the flesh is weak.' And again he went away 40 and prayed, saying the same words. And when he returned, he found them asleep again; for their eyes were heavy; and they knew not what to answer him. 41 And he cometh the third time, and saith unto them; 'Do ye sleep on to the end, and take your rest? enough, the hour is come; behold, the Son of man is 42 betrayed into the hands of sinners. Arise, let us be 'going; behold, he that betrayeth me is at hand.'

43

And immediately while he was yet speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, cometh, and with him a great crowd with swords and staves, from the high priests and scribes 44 and elders. And he that betrayed him had given them a signal, saying; 'Whomsoever I shall kiss, the same is 45 he; seize him, and lead him away safely.' And when he came, he goeth straightway to him, and saith; 'Rabbi, 'Rabbi;' and kissed him. And they laid their hands on

him and seized him. And one of the by-standers, draw- 47 ing his sword, struck the high priest's slave, and cut off his ear. And Jesus answered and said unto them; 'Are 48 'ye come out as against a thief, with swords and staves 'to take me? I was daily with you in the temple teach- 49 'ing, and ye seized me not. But it is that the scrip'tures may be fulfilled.' And they all left him and fled. 50 And there followed him a certain young man having a 51 linen cloth thrown about his naked body; and the young men seized him; and he left the linen cloth and fled 52 from them naked.

And they led Jesus away to the high priest. And 53 with him were assembled all the high priests and elders and scribes. And Peter followed him from afar into the 54 court [or palace] of the high priest; and he was sitting with the servants and warming himself at the fire. And 55 the high priests and all the high council sought for witness against Jesus to get him put to death; and found

none.

For many bare false witness against him; but 56 their witness was not enough. And there arose certain 57 men who bare false witness against him, saying; 'We 58 'heard him say; I will destroy this temple made with 'hands, and within three days I will build another not made 'with hands.' But neither so was their witness enough. 59 And the high priest standing up in the midst, asked 60 Jesus, saying; Answerest thou nothing? What is it 'that these men witness against thee?' But he held his 61 peace, and answered nothing. Again the high priest asked him, and saith unto him; 'Art thou the Christ, 'the son of the Blessed One?' And Jesus said; 'I am; 62 'and ye will see the Son of man sitting on the right hand ' of power, and coming with the clouds of heaven.' And 63 the high priest rent his clothes, and saith; 'What further 'need have we of witnesses? Ye have heard the 64

blasphemy; what think ye?' And they all condemned him to be deserving of death. And some began to spit 65 at him, and to cover his face, and to buffet him, and to say unto him; 'Prophesy;' and the officers struck him with the palms of their hands.

And as Peter was below in the courtyard, there cometh 66 one of the maids of the high priest; and seeing Peter 67 warming himself, she looked at him, and said; And

68 thou wast with Jesus the Nazarene.' But he denied, saying; 'I know not, neither understand I what thou 'sayest.' And he went out into the porch; and a cock 69 crew. And the maid seeing him again, began to say to 70 the by-standers; This is one of them.' And he again denied it. And again a little afterwards the by-standers said to Peter; Truly thou art one of them; for thou 71'art a Galilean, and thy speech agreeth thereto.' But he began to curse and swear; 'I know not this man of whom 72'ye speak.' And a second time a cock crew. And Peter was reminded of the word that Jesus said unto him; Before the cock crow twice thou wilt deny me thrice. And as he thought thereon he wept.

I And straightway in the morning the high priests held a consultation with the elders and scribes. And the whole high council bound Jesus, and carried him away, and 2 delivered him up to Pilate. And Pilate asked him; 'Art 'thou the king of the Jews?' And he answering said unto him; Thou sayest.' And the high priests accused him 4 of many things. And Pilate again asked him, saying; 'Answerest thou nothing? behold how many things they 'witness against thee.' But Jesus no more answered any 6 thing; so that Pilate marvelled. Now at every feast he used to release one prisoner to them, whomsoever they asked for. And there was one named Barabbas, bound with his fellow rebels, who had committed murder in the 8 rebellion. And the crowd crying aloud began to ask him 9 to do as he always did to them. And Pilate answered

them, saying; 'Will ye that I release unto you the king 10 'of the Jews?' For he knew that the high priests had 11 delivered him up through envy. But the high priests

stirred up the crowd, that he should rather release unto 12 them Barabbas. And Pilate answering again said unto them; 'What then will ye that I should do to him whom 13 'ye call king of the Jews?' And they again cried out; 14 'Crucify him.' And Pilate said to them; 'Why, what evil

'hath he done?' And they cried out loudly; 'Crucify 15 'him.' And Pilate wishing to content the crowd, released Barabbas unto them; and delivered up Jesus, when he had scourged him, to be crucified.

16

And the soldiers led him away into the courtyard, which is the Prætorium [or Roman castle]; and they

call together the whole band. And they clothed him 17 with purple, and platted a crown of thorns, and put it on him, and began to salute him; 'Hail, king of the 18 'Jews!' And they smote his head with a reed, and spit 19 at him, and bowing their knees worshipped him. And 20 when they had mocked him, they took off the purple, and put his own clothes on him.

And they lead him out to crucify him. And they force 21 into their service one Simon a Cyrenæan, who was passing by, coming out of the country, the father of Alexander and Rufus, that he may bear his cross. And they 22 bring him to Golgotha, a place which when interpreted is the Place of a Skull. And they offered him to drink 23 wine mingled with myrrh; but he received it not. And 24 when they had crucified him, they part his clothes, casting lots for them, what each should take. And it was the third hour, and they crucified him. And the inscrip- 26 tion of his accusation was written over; THE KING OF THE JEWS. And with him they crucify two robbers, one 27 on his right hand, and one on his left. And the scripture was fulfilled, which saith; And he was numbered with law-breakers. And they that passed by reviled him, 29 shaking their heads and saying; 'Ah, thou that de'stroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save 'thyself, and come down from the cross.' And in like 31 wise the high priests, mocking among themselves with the scribes, said; 'He saved others, cannot he save him'self? Let the Christ, the king of Israel, come down now 32 'from the cross, that we may see and believe.' And they that were crucified with him, reviled him. And when 33 it was the sixth hour there was darkness over the whole land till the ninth hour. And at the ninth hour Jesus 34 cried with a loud voice, saying; 'Eloi, Eloi, lamma 'sabachthani?' which is, when interpreted, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? And some of the by- 35 standers, when they heard it, said; Behold, he calleth 'Elijah.' And one ran and filled a spunge with vinegar, and 36 putting it on a reed, gave him to drink, saying; 'Let him alone; let us see if Elijah cometh to take him down.' And Jesus cried with a loud voice, and breathed his last. 37 And the veil of the temple was rent in two from top to 38 bottom. And when the centurion who stood over against 39

him saw that he so cried out, and breathed his last, he 40 said; Truly this man was a son of God.' There were also women looking on from afar; among whom also was Mary the Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the 41 less and of Joses, and Salome; who also when he was in Galilee followed him, and ministered unto him; and many other women, who came up with him to Jerusalem.

42

And now in the evening, when it was the Preparation, 43 that is an [evening] before a sabbath, Joseph of Arimathæa, an honourable counsellor, who was himself also waiting for the kingdom of God, came and went in boldly 44 to Pilate, and craved the body of Jesus. And Pilate mar

velled if he were yet dead; and calling the centurion, he 45 asked him if he had been long dead. And when he knew 46 it from the centurion, he gave the body to Joseph. And

he bought a linen cloth, and taking him down, he wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a tomb which was hewn out of a rock, and rolled a stone to the door of the 47 tomb. And Mary the Magdalene and Mary [the mother] of Joses saw where he was laid.

1

And when the sabbath was passed, Mary the Magdalene, and Mary the [mother] of James, and Salome, bought 2 spices that they might come and anoint him. And very early on the first day of the week they came to the tomb 3 as the sun rose. And they said to themselves; 'Who

'will roll away the stone for us from the door of the 4 'tomb?' And when they looked up, they saw that the 5 stone had been rolled away; for it was very great. And

entering into the tomb, they saw a young man sitting on the right side, clothed in a white robe; and they were 6 affrighted. And he saith unto them; 'Be not affrighted; 'ye seek Jesus the Nazarene, who was crucified; he hath 'been raised, he is not here; behold the place where they 7 'laid him. But go your way, tell his disciples and Peter, 'that he goeth before you into Galilee; there ye will see 8 'him, as he told you.' And they went out, and fled from the tomb; and trembling and amazement seized them, and they said nothing to any one; for they were afraid.

9

And having arisen early on the first day of the week, he appeared first to Mary the Magdalene, out of whom 10 he had cast seven demons. And she went and told those
