The ADMINISTRATION

Of the SACRAMENT of BAPTISM to LITTLE CHILDREN.

The Child being brought to the Church-door, and placed on the God-mother's right arm; the Priest having afked it's name, fays:

faith avail thee? A. To life everlasting. Pr. If thou wouldst enter into life, keep the commandments: Thou fhalt love the Lord thy God with thy whole heart, with thy whole foul, and with thy whole mind; and thy neighbour as thyself.

Then the Priest blows thrice on the face of the child as it were in contempt of the Devil, and fays:

Pr. Depart from him [or her] O unclean spirit, and yield place to the Holy Ghost the comforter. Then he makes the fign of the cross on the child's forehead and breaft, faying:

Pr. Receive the fign of the crofs on thy forehead, and in thy heart: practife the heavenly commandments: and let fuch be thy conduct of life, that thou may'ft now become the temple of God. a Expl. The facrament of faith, viz, Baptifm. VOL. II. q

Let us pray. Preces noftras.

Raciously hear, O Lord, we beseech thee, our prayers; and by thy continual protection guard this thy chofen fervant N. now marked with the fign of the cross of our Lord, that obferving thefe firft Inftructions of the greatness of thy glory, by keeping thy commandments, he [or fhe] may deferve to attain to the glory of a new birth. Thro' Christ our Lord. R. Amen.

Then he lays his hand on the child's head, Jaying:
Let us pray. Omnipotens.

Almighty and eternal God, Father of our Lord Jefus Chrift, vouchfafe to look down on this thy fervant N. whom thou hast been pleased to call to thefe first rudiments of faith: take from him [or her] all blindness of heart: break all the bands of Satan, by which he [or fhe] hath been bound: open to him, or her] O Lord, the gate of thy mercy, that being feafoned with the fign of thy wisdom, he [or the] may be freed from the filth of all concupifcence; and, following the fweet odour of thy precepts, may joyfully ferve thee in thy Church, and daily increase in perfection. Thro' the fame Chrift our Lord. R. Amen.

The BLESSING of the SALT. Exorcife thee, O creature of falt, in the name of God the Father almighty, by the love of our Lord Jefus Chrift, and by the power of the Holy Ghoft. I exorcife thee by the living God, by the true God, by the holy God; by that God, who created thee for the benefit of mankind, and ordered thee to be bleffed by his fervants for the people that come to the faith; that in the name of the Holy Trinity thou may'st become a wholesome mystery to drive away the enemy. Wherefore, we beseech thee, O Lord our God, that fanctifying thou wouldst fanctify, and bleffing thou wouldst blefs this creature of falt, that

it may become to all that receive it a perfect remedy, and may remain in their hearts, in the name of the fame Lord Jesus Christ, who is to come to judge the living and the dead, and the world by fire. R. Amen.

Then he puts fome of the falt in the child's mouth, faying:

N. Receive the falt of wisdom, and may it be to thee a propitiation unto life everlafling. R. Amen. Pr. Peace be with Pr. Pax tecum. thee. R. And with thy Et cum fpiritu tuo,

Let us pray.

Deus patrum.

God of our forefathers, O God the author of all truth, we humbly befeech thee, graciously vouchfafe to look down on this thy fervant N. and as he [or fhe] has tafted this falt the fift food, do not permit him [or her] to hunger any longer for want of heavenly Food; to the end that he [or fhe] may always be fervent in fpirit, joyful in hope, and always obedient to thy name. Bring him [or her] O Lord, we befeech, to the laver of regeneration; that, with thy faithful, he [or fae] may deferve the eternal rewards, which thou haft promifed. Thro' Christ our Lord. R. Amen.

Another EXORCIS M.

Exorcife thee, O unclean fpirit, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, that thou go out and depart from this fervant of God N. For it is he that commandeth thee, O curfed Fiend, who walked upon the fea, and ftretched forth his right hand to Peter, when finking. Therefore, curfed Devil, remember thy fentence; and give honour to the living and true God: give honour to Jefus Chrift his Son, and to the Holy Ghost: and depart from this fervant of God N. For our God and Lord Jefus Chrift hath vouchfafed to call.

him [or her] to his holy grace and bleffing, and to the font of baptifm. [Here he makes the sign of the crofs on the child's forehead.] And this fign of the crofs, which we make on his [or her] forehead, may'ft thou, curfed Devil, never dare to violate. Thro' the fame Jefus Chrift our Lord. R. Amen. Then he lays his hand again on the child's head:

Let us pray. Eternam.

Lord most holy, Father almighty, eternal God, the author of light and truth, I beseech thy everlasting and juft mercy in behalf of this thy fervant N. that thou wouldst vouchsafe to enlighten him [or her] with the light of thy knowledge: cleane and fanctify him [or her]: give him [or her] true wifdom; that being made worthy to receive thy baptifm, he [or fhe] may perfevere in firm hope, righteous defigns, and holy doctrine. Thro' Chrift our Lord. R. Amen.

When the child is brought into the Church.

Pr. N. Come into the Church of God, that thou may't have part with Chrift to everlasting life. R. Amen.

When they are come into the Church the Godfather and Godmother fay the Apoftles Creed and the Lord's Prayer. Then follows this other

EXORCISM.

Exorcife thee, whatever unclean spirit thou art, in the name of God the Father almighty, and in the name of Jefus Chrift his Son, our Lord and judge, and by the power of the Holy Ghost, that thou depart from this hand-work of God N. which our Lord hath been pleased to call to his holy temple, to the end it may become the temple of the living God, and the Holy Ghoft may dwell therein. Thro' the fame Jefus Christ our Lord, who is to come to judge the living and the dead, and the world by fire. R. Amen.

When he touches the ears and noftrils with spittle. Pr. Ephetha, that is, be opened, to an odour of fweetnefs. And be thou, O Devil, put to flight, for the judgment of God against thee is at hand.

Pr. N. Doft thou renounce Satan? A. I renounce him. Pr. And all his works? A. I renounce them. Pr. And all his pomps? A. I renounce them.

Then he anoints the child on the breast, and between the fhoulders, faying:

Pr. I anoint thee with the oil of falvation in Chrift Jefus our Lord, that thou mayft have eternal life. R. Amen.

Pr. N. Doft thou believe in God the Father Almighty, the Creator of heaven and earth? A. I do. Pr. Doft thou believe in Jefus Chrift his only Son our Lord, who was born and fuffered for us? A. I do. Pr. Doft thou believe in the Holy Ghoft, the holy Catholick Church, the Communion of Saints, the forgiveness of fins, the refurrection of the body, and life everlafting? A. I do. Pr. N. Doit thou defire to be baptized? A. I do defire it.

Then he pours the water on the child, saying :

Pr. N. I BAPTIZE THEE IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, AND OF THE SON, AND OF THE HOLY GHOST. R. Amen.

Or if there be a doubt whether the child hath been baptized before or not, be fays:

N. If thou art not baptized, I BAPTIZE THEE IN THE NAME OF THE FATHER, AND OF THE SON, AND OF THE HOLY GHOST. R. Amen.

When he anoints the head of the child with the holy Chrifi.

Pr. May the almighty God, the Father of our Lord Jefus Chrift, who hath given thee a new birth by water and the Holy Ghof, and hath granted:
