HYMN XLIV.

Sevens.

The Resurrection and Ascension,

I.

ANGELS, roll the rock away,

Death, yield up the mighty prey:

See he rises from the tomb,

Glowing with immortal bloom. Hallelujah.

11.

'Tis the Saviour, angels raise
Fame's eternal trump of praise;
Let the earth's remotest bound,
Hear the joy-inspiring sound.

III.

Now, ye saints, lift up your eyes,
Now to glory see him rise,
In long triumph up the sky,

Hal.

Up to waiting worlds on high.

Iv.

Heaven displays her portals wide,
Glorious hero, thro' them ride;
King of Glory mount the throne,
Thy Great Father's and thy own.

V.

Praise him, all ye heavenly choirs,
Praise, and sweep your golden lyres;
Shout, O earth, in rapturous song,
Let the strains be sweet and strong.

VI.

Every note with wonder swell,
Sin o'erthrown and captiv'd hell;
Where is hell's once dreaded king!
Where, O death, thy mortal sting!

HYMN XLV. L. M.

Christ's Ascension.

I.

UR LORD is risen from the dead,

Οι Our JESUS is gone up on high;

The powers of hell are captive led,
Dragg'd to the portals of the sky.

II.

There his triumphal chariot waits, And angels chant the solemn lay: "Lift up your heads, ye heavenly gates! "Ye everlasting doors, give way!".

III.

Loose all your bars of massy light,
And wide unfold the radiant scene;
He claims those mansions as his right,
Receive the King of Glory in.

IV.

"Who is the King of Glory, who?"
The LORD that all his foes o'ercanie,
The world, sin, death, and hell o'erthrew;
And JESUS is the conqueror's name.

V..

Lo! his triumphal chariot waits,

And angels chant the solemn lay, "Lift up your heads, ye heavenly gates'; "Ye everlasting doors, give way!"

VI.

"Who is the King of Glory, who?'

[ocr errors]

The LORD of boundless power possest,

The King of saints and angels too,
GOD over all, for ever blest!

HYMN XLVI. L. M.
God Supreme.

WHAT

I.

HAT is our GOD, or what his name, Nor men can learn, nor angels teach; He dwells conceal'd in radiant flame,

Where neither eyes nor thoughts can reach,

II.

The spacious worlds of heav'nly light, Compar'd with him, how short they fall? They are too dark, and he too bright, Nothing are they, and GoD is all.

III.

He spoke the wond'rous word, and lo,
Creation rose at his command:

Whirlwinds and Seas their limits know,
Bound in the hollow of his hand.

IV.

There rests the earth, there roll the spheres,
There Nature leans, and feels her prop:
But his own self-sufficience bears
The weight of his own glories up.

V.

The tide of creatures ebbs and flows,
Measuring their changes by the moon:
No ebb his sea of glory knows ;
His age is one eternal noon.

VI.

Then fly, my song, an endless round,
The lofty tune let Michael raise;
All nature dwell upon the sound,
But we can ne'er fulfil the praise.

HYMN XLVII. C. M.
The Nativity of Christ.

I.

ARISE, my slumb'ring soul arise,

And see the mighty GoD,

Aside he throws, majestic robes
To put on flesh and blood.

II.

See HIM who heav'n's high arches spread
And form'd the circling sky;
JEHOVAH-LORD the MIGHTY GOD
Here in a manger lie!

III.

Here wonders in fresh wonders meet,
Surprising to behold:

Angels in songs divine unite,
As by the prophets told.

IV.

The heav'nly choir, inspired with joy
Struck loud their sweetest string;
Then down they swiftly wing'd their way
And as they fly they sing.

V.

All glory to our GoD on high, And heav'nly peace on earth: Good will to men, to angels joy, At the great Saviour's birth!"

VI.

A star the eastern sages led

To see their new-born king,

They own'd his pow'r, confess'd hi mGoD, And did their off'rings bring.

VII.

Let Greeks deride, and Jews blaspheme,
And hell with envy burn;
With angels, we'll adore the name,
Of JESUS who was born.

VIII.

With grateful hymns we'll sing the praise,
Of our INCARNATE GOD:
Hosanna, in loud accents raise,
And be his name ador'd!

1x.

To celebrate the heav'nly birth
Let all within us join;

Let air, and seas, and heav'n and earth,
Adore with notes divine.

HYMN XLVIII. L. M.

Jesus the only Saviour.

I.

DAM, our father and our head,
Transgress'd; and justice dooni'd us
dead:

The fiery law speaks all despair,
There's no reprieve, nor pardon there.

II.

Call a bright council in the skies; "Seraphs, the mighty and the wise, "Say, what expedient can you give, "That sin be damn'd, and sinners live?

III.

"Speak, are you strong to bear the load, "The weighty vengeance of a GOD?
