III.

Neighbours and friends, that round us fall,
All join this serious solemn call;
Their tombs, their gaping graves dispense
A mute, but moving eloquence.

IV.

Blest angels call us from the sky,
In pity's tender strain they cry,
"Awake, salvation to secure,'

And make heav'ns endless glories sure.

V.

And cou'd we see the souls in woe,
In chains of darkness bound below,
Each dismal groan wou'd sound "beware
"And fly the pangs of deep despair."

VI.

LORD, ev'ry careless heart alarm;
May earthly toys no longer charm;
May all the warning voice obey,
Awake and tremble to delay.

VII.

By faith and holiness, and love
Prepare us for the realms above;
Then shall we sink in death's short night,
To rise in everlasting light

HYMN CXXXV. L. M.
Comfort to Mourners for Sin.

I.

O more, ye humble mourners, sigh;
Let sorrow raise the downcast eye.

See! faith descends to banish fear,
And dry the penitential tear.

II.

"Look to that crimson'd cross, she cries,
There what a glorious victim dies!
His parting pangs, his streaming blood,
Proclaim the kind forgiving GOD.

III.

Look to the bright ethereal plains;
There now the victor JESUS reigns,
With pow'r to save, with love to bless,
A refuge sure in deep distress."

IV..

Sweet tidings welcome! that impart New life to my desponding heart: Welcome blest sound of sins forgiv'n, Of peace restor❜d, and promis'd heav'n!

V.

O GOD! thy vast amazing grace
Claims all my wonder, all my praise:
My pow'rs, and passions I resign,
To be alone, and ever thine.

VI.

Send thy blest spirit from above
To fire my soul with sacred love;
Cleanse ev'ry stain of guilt and sin;
And whisper heav'nly peace within.

Efficacy of Faith.

way,

HO' foes and fears beset the
And hope and comfort seem to fly,

Yet, christian, never faint, but pray,

And faith shall bring thee help from high.

II.

She'll sooth the troubled thoughts to rest,
She'll silence danger's loud alarm,
Breathe a new vigor in the breast,
Aud with unconquer'd courage arm.

III.

What tho' the winds and waves engage,
Till rocks are from their bases torn;
The floating buoy defies their rage,
Upon the driving billows born.

IV.

Thus on the world's tumultuous main,
Tho' saints are oft by tempests tost,
The billows round shall beat in vain,
And not a faithful soul be lost.

v.

Their SAVIOUR o'er the swelling tide
Shall waft them to the heav'nly shore,
Where gentle rills of comfort glide,

And storms & waves shall toss no more.

There, shall his happy saints at rest,
Their finish'd toil with wonder trace,

And sing, in endless glory blest,
The triumphs of redeeming grace.

HYMN CXXXVII. P. M.

Glory to God in his Works and Word.

I.

UR souls, O LORD, adore

OUR

The wonders of thy power,

Thy wisdom, and thy boundless love,

To our admiring eyes

What various beauties rise,

And bloom below, and shine above!

11.

The verdure of the vale,
The cool refreshing gale,

The flowers that richly grace the ground;
The purple beam of morn,
The seasons as they turn

In their harmonious order round.

II.

The heav'ns above our head

Magnificently spread,

And glitt'ring stars, that gild the skies;
The sun's majestic blaze,

The moon with milder rays,

Proclaim thee good, and great, and wise.

IV.

But in thy word divine,

With fairer lustre shine,
The glories of redeeming grace :
A kind forgiving GOD,

A dying SAVIOUR's blood,

Transcend the brightest angel's praise.

V.

O be thy gospel known,
Wherever shines the sun,
And nobler light and life convey,
Let ev'ry land adore,

And to thy saving power,
A chearful praise, and homage pay.

HYMN CXXXVIII. L. M.

God the Refuge and Defence of his People.

[ocr errors]

1.

BLEST the souls! who firmly just,
Still persevere in duty's road,

When troubles come, their hope, and trust,
Their refuge, and their rest is GOD.

II.

While tempests darken all the skies,
And waves of rough affliction roar,
While hostile legions round them rise,
And hell gapes eager to devour:

III.

They may their utmost pow'r defy,
And smile at all their vain alarms,
Their guardian GoD is ever nigh,
And their's his everlasting arms.

IV.

He can the roaring storms assuage;
The swelling wave obeys his will:
And when the fiercer passions rage,
He speaks they tremble, and are still.
