INTRODUCTION.

FEW authors have gained world-famed celebrity so quickly as did Professor Henry Drummond. From the pastorate of an obscure mission station in the island of Malta, he soared gradually in moral intellectuality until, having returned to Glasgow and won the titles of Fellow of the Royal Society of Engineers and Fellow of the Geographical Society, he appeared in Northfield, Massachusetts, in 1887, at the invitation of Mr. Moody, and shone as a beacon in religious literature.

Born at Stirling-the historic Stirling of the Scottish royalty he was educated at the Edinburgh University. Having joined the ministry, his first evangelical labors were in far-off Malta. But, soon, his great Christian soul ached for wider fields, and, returning to Scotland, he was appointed lecturer at the Free Church College in Glasgow, and took charge of a workingmen's mission in that city. Here his philosophical teachings and deep thought attracted attention; and in a little while Henry Drummond had sprung into the first rank of moralists and social philosophers.
