Sig: a place of passage; of which there are many in the course of the river Jordan. Bethabara was a common name for such: the place of this history is supposed to have been near the Lake of Tiberias; and in the region under Herod's jurisdiction, who afterwards imprisoned John. Scythopolis, or the ancient Bethshan, in the S.B. corner of Galilee, agrees very well with a known ford frequently crossed by modern travellers about 8 or 10 miles south of Lake Gennesaret.
