* The two preceding lists are drawn up chiefly to shew the sources from whence the details in these volumes have been obtained. The number of references, of course, is much below the actual number of localities or stations indicated; a single reference often sufficing for two or more expressed stations. These numbers have been hastily reckoned up from the proofs, and may not be quite exact, but they will indicate, in a general way, my obligations to the different persons and works mentioned, in so far as this can be shewn by numbers alone. But the real value of the communications often depends on other circumstances than the mere number of localities, such as the exactness of the descriptions, the confirmation by specimens, or the rarity of the plants communicated; so that no invidious distinction can be drawn by comparison of the figures following any names.
