THE following pages have been written with a view to explain the character, fruit, and conflict of the life of Christ in the spirit of man. I have endeavoured to set forth the great principles of this divine truth, leaving the thoughtful reader to draw out for himself the various details. My chief motive and aim have been to exalt the Lord Christ, by showing his true place, not only as the divine Righteousness, and the great Substitute of his people, but as the All in all of the new man— of that which constitutes the blessedness, the holiness, and the glory of renewed humanity. Other truths springing out of this all-vital root have also been touched upon, especially those which speak of the claims of our gracious Lord upon the hearts of his saints.
