In 1901 there were employed in all the textile factories of the United Kingdom 1,029,535 persons (379,211 males and 650,142 females), of whom 772,247 (290,606 males and 481,641 females) were over 18 years of age, 220,595 (71,707 males and 148,888 females) between 14 and 18, and 36,511 (16,898 males and 19,613 females) under 14.

The subjoined tables show the total quantities of wool (sheep and lambs', alpaca and vicuña, with allied kinds, and mohair) imported into the United Kingdom and the quantities re exported; the estimated clip of home grown wool in the United Kingdom, the quantity exported, the balance retained, and the total quantity of imported and home-grown wool retained for consumption in the United Kingdom in recent years. The figures have been kindly supplied by Mr. F. Hooper, of the Bradford Chamber of Commerce.

The quantities are stated in millions of pounds :

In addition to the above it is estimated that the wool obtained from sheep and lamb skins imported amounts to about 30 million lbs. per annum, and that the quantity of "pulled wool" (from woollen rags) consumed in this country ranges from 120 t6 150 million lbs. per annum.

The following information is furnished by Mr. Thomas R. Ellison of Liverpool :—

A century ago the value of cotton, woollen, and linen yarns and piece goods produced in Great Britain and Ireland was about 22,000,000l.—say woollen 17,000,0007., linen 4,000,000l., and cotton 1,000,0007. Of recent years the value has been about 170,000,0007.-say, cotton 100,000,000l., woollen 50,000,000l., and linen 20,000,0007. The total amount of capital employed is about 200,000,0007., and at least 5,000,000 people-men, women, and children-are dependent upon these industries for their livelihood. Moreover, one-half of the value of British and Irish products exported consists of textiles. The progress made by each branch is shown in the subjoined statement of the weight of raw material used and the value of yarns and goods exported ::

The United Kingdom is a free trading country, the only imports on which customs duties are levied being chicory, cocoa, coffee, dried fruits, spirits, tea, sugar, tobacco, and wine-spirits, tobacco, tea and wine yielding the bulk of the entire levies. A duty on corn was imposed in 1902, but withdrawn in 1903. In 1903 the imports free of duty (exclusive of bullion and specie and diamonds) amounted to 465,548,7027., and those subject to duty to
