The total amount of the import duties collected in 1903 was 32 millions of kroner (about one-tenth in value of the total imports), divided among the principal articles as follows:-Breadstuffs, 3,136,000 kroner; coffee, 3,970,000 kroner; tea, 240,000 kroner; sugar, 7,163,000 kroner; tobacco, 4,107,000 kroner; spirits and wines, 2,359,000 kroner; manufactured goods, 3,897,000 kroner. The value of imports subject to duty (1903) was 136,740,200 kroner and of duty-free 156,065,800 kroner.

Other articles on which import duties are levied are salted meat and fish, cheese, butter, soap, candles, cutlery and metal goods, yarns and woven goods. The free list comprises iron and other metals, unwrought or in bars, plates, nails, &c.; artizan tools, industrial and agricultural implements and machinery, coal, coke, petroleum, wool, ships and boats (not for pleasure), alkali, and other chemicals, rags, unbound books, and other articles. The tariff system of Norway is quite distinct from that of Sweden.

Under the treaty of 1826 there is "the most favoured nation" treatment between the United Kingdom and Norway.

The recorded values are calculated according to information supplied by Exchange Committees and merchants. Those of imports include the invoice price, freight, packing, and insurance, but not duty; those of exports give the price free on board in Norwegian port, excluding freight and insurance, but including packing and Norwegian commercial rofit. The returns of quantities are compiled from the officially controlled declarations of importers and exporters. These declarations state the countries from which the articles re directly imported and to which they are directly exported. An article coming, for example, from the East Indies via London is recorded as coming from England. The ecorded imports include all articles imported, whether for consumption inland or for rexportation. The exports are divided into exports of Norwegian articles (special trade) nd exports of foreign articles (transit, warehousing on credit, duty-paid and duty-free rticles). A considerable part of the export trade over the land frontier between Norway nd Sweden escapes the control of the Customs' authorities.
