Preface.

THE

HE four years which have elapsed since the publication of the first volume of the Bibliotheca Cornubiensis have been spent by its authors in passing through the press the pages of its successor. Mindful of the favourable reception accorded to the first volume of their work, the Authors have adhered almost without variation to the principles which guided them in its compilation. They have ventured however to incorporate in this volume a large quantity of biographical information concerning the eminent Cornishmen mentioned in its pages. They found that the enquiries which they prosecuted without cessation in every part of the county of Cornwall for information as to the lives and publications of local authors, placed them in possession of many facts which would undoubtedly have been forgotten in a few years. It was their first intention to have postponed the publication of this additional information, but they gradually arrived at the conclusion, that to print it in the present work would ensure its safe preservation for future generations, and make their labours not less acceptable to the generality of their readers.

The biographical details and lists of works now presented to public criticism, have been corrected, in the case of living writers, by the authors themselves; when through death or absence from England the benefit of this personal supervision could not be obtained, the lists have been submitted to the correction of their friends and relations. If this circumstance has in some degree delayed the appearance of this work it has unquestionably increased the accuracy of its statements.
