CARLYLE SARTOR RESARTUS THE FRENCH REVOLUTION EDITED WITH INTRODUCTION AND NOTES BY SAMUEL B. HEMINGWAY, PH.D. ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF ENGLISH IN YALE COLLEGE AND CHARLES SEYMOUR, PH.D. ASSISTANT PROFESSOR OF HISTORY IN YALE COLLEGE D. C. HEATH & CO., PUBLISHERS BOSTON NEW YORK CHICAGO PREFATORY NOTE THE selections from CARLYLE's Sartor Resartus, French Revolution, and Past and Present contained in this volume are designed to give the general reader a fair impression of the nature and scope of these works. The Introduction deals chiefly with the circumstances attending the composition and publication of these three books, but includes also brief critical discussions of the works themselves. In view of the many biographical sketches of CARLYLE, it has been deemed unnecessary to add to their number in this volume. Those who have had experience in teaching CARLYLE'S French Revolution to college undergraduates must have felt the need of an edition provided with historical summaries and explanatory notes. Few historical works presuppose such an extensive knowledge of history on the part of the ordinary reader. Professor SEYMOUR'S summaries and notes will fill, we hope, a very specific need. S. B. H. |
