PREFACE

THE following sermons were written for preaching without any view to publication, and are now sent forth at the request of some who heard them. Hence, it has seemed advisable to print them as they were delivered, with very few alterations. To recast them in literary form would have involved much labour, and would not so well have met the desire of my friends. If the book should fall into the hands of others, they will pardon the freedom of style and occasional colloquialisms which from the pulpit were not inappropriate. This will not, it is hoped, mar its usefulness should it find its way into a wider circle.

While not in any strict sense theological discourses, the author ventures to hope that they may throw some light on problems which are exercising many minds at the present day, and may show incidentally that much of the so-called "new theology" existed in embryo far back in the last century; for most of these sermons were preached more than five-andtwenty years ago. The last, dealing with just one aspect of foreign missions, is of more recent date. It

is added because I am unwilling that anything which may be regarded as a record of my ministry should appear without any reference whatever to a subject in which I have always felt the deepest interest.

42, DALEBURY ROAD, S.W. March, 1913.

ALFRED HOLBORN.
