GLORY TO GOD IN THE HIGHEST, PEACE ON EARTH, GOOD WILL TOWARD

MEN

We have not felt that the time was ripe to make an open declaration of peace, until now the Spirit says, “Let the Word of Peace go forth."

Unity people the world round are declaring peace and good will among all men. The mental forces that made for war are near their end, and our word of peace will help to bring about final adjustment of the minds of all men in Divine Love and Wisdom. "And there shall be no more war."

A FINANCIAL REPORT

Our friends have responded generously to our call for a sustaining fund to meet the high price of paper. The total of the amounts received from many sources would not balance the extra outlay, but the law has been more than fulfilled in an increased income from subscriptions. So instead of having a hard time in paying our bills we have had right the opposite, the fact being that we never paid our accounts so promptly as we have during the big advance in the price of paper.

Last year at this time our monthly paper account ran from $700 to $900, while now it is seldom less than $1800. This is but one item of advance in supplies; everything we use has gone up in like proportion and it will cost us at least $25,000 more to carry on our work this year than it did last.

So we have cause to be thankful for the sustaining power of the Lord in this anticipated stress. We knew that the supply to meet the demand would be forthcoming, but the ease with which it has been accomplished has been surprising.

To you, dear friends, we give thanks for holding up our hands, not only with the temporal symbol of financial plenty, but also the whole-hearted blessings which you have

sent so abundantly. The silent and written words of God's Bounty have made our demonstration easy and we are truly grateful for all that you have done.

To the friends whom we have not been able to answer by letter, because they did not give their names, we here make our acknowledgment. The Lord blesses and prospers you according to our word, which has never yet been returned to us void. The following neat epistle was accompanied by a draft for $100:

San Prancisco · 2nd .Petr uary 1917.

THE UNITY METAPHYSICAL BIBLE DIC

TIONARY

Answer to Correspondent by the Author, R. C. Douglass,

"In the introduction of the Metaphysical Bible Dictionary, the name Eliezer is written in this way:

1+30+10+70+7+200 equals 318

[blocks in formation]

Please explain why the second "e" is omitted. We are interested in understanding this application of numbers."

Your question is a very natural one for an English student, because there might seem to be unfairness in the omission of one letter, as though I were forcing the conclusion.

First, let me say, every language has sounds which have no correspondent in other languages.

Second, it is a peculiarity of the Old Hebrew, that it was a language without vowels-a mystical language; which made it quite necessary for the reader to be an expert in placing vowels, in order to read intelligently. For instance, the name of God-"JHVH," is quite unpronouncable. By adding three vowels we pronounce it "Jehovah," or by inserting two it becomes, "Yahveh," the "J" having the sound of "Y."

In Hebrew "Eliezer" is written, "Aliezer;" but it must be noted, that neither "A" nor "I" nor "E" is a vowel. For "A" is a breathing, as in El-not an open vowel, but corresponding to "e" before a consonant—to us a vowel, but not to them. Likewise the "I" is not a vowel, but has a sound like the English "y." "E" has no corresponding English sound. In explanation, it is represented by "O" broad, as in ought, or by, "aa gutteral." The last "ee" in "Eliezer" is put in by translators to make it correspond to English. The Hebrews themselves pronounce the name, "Elyaazer" or "Elyawzer"-yet it is spelled, Aliezr, the "e" in question not being there. These six letters sum up "318", as shown in the book.

Thus the mystical interpretation of the number, "318"

is the key to the historical allegory, as presented by the ancient mystical writer, to teach a universal lesson-that the individual, swamped in the slums of sin, will find, when his heart turns in contrition to the Christ (Abraham), that the Christ flies to his rescue, and with his "318 trained servants" delivers him from the carnal-mind bondage. The "318 trained servants, born in Abram's house" are "Eliezer of Damascus"-regenerated Intellect, which performs the task in the name of Abraham. This is perhaps the most remarkable allegory of the Scriptures, and when understood gives a new meaning to the story of Abraham and Lot.

UNITY GOOD WORDS CLUB

Are you cooperating with the Good Words Club? We invite all who wish to uplift and make the world better to join this organization. Never, at any time in the world's history have there been so many uniting for the advancement of the human family. One of the great factors used in gaining this end is the transforming power of the Word. Cooperation with this Club serves a two-fold purpose-it affords individual benefit and it assures the betterment of the race. The club's membership, now numbering 7,000, extends to all parts of the world, and is increasing steadily with an average of two hundred and fifty enrollments a month. Reports from members testify to the wonderful practical results being gained and they are truly an inspiration.

There are no dues nor fees connected with the membership in this club, free-will offerings meeting its support.

The club emblem, symbolizing its principles, is most attractive and distinctive, in the design of the Japanese "Three Wise Monkeys," symbolizing-"I will see no evil," "I will hear no evil," "I will speak no evil."

Membership is made through signing the pledge:

"I believe in the power of the spoken word, and I realize that I am held accountable for even my lightest words. I also believe that there, is power in united effort.
