I. SAMUEL.

David taketh Saups Spear.

folly is with him: but I thine handmaid come to Abigail, to Carmel, they spake unto faw not the young men of my lord, whom her, faying, David fent us unto thee, to take thou didft fend. thee to him to wife.

26 Now therefore, my lord, as the LORD liveth, and as thy foul liveth, feeing the LORD hath withholden thee from coming to feed blood, and from avenging thy felt with thine own hand, now let thine enemies, and they that feek evil to my lord, be as Nabal.

27 And now this bleffing, whach thine handmaid hath brought unto my lord, let it even be given unto the young men that fol. Jow my lord.

28 I pray thee, forgive the trefpafs of thine handmaid for the LORD will certainly make my lord a fure houfe; becaufe my lord fighteth the battles of the LORD, and evil hath not been found in thee all thy days.

29 Yet a man is rifen to purfue thee, and to feek thy foul: but the foul of my lord fhall be bound in the bundle of life with

the LORD thy God; and the fouls of thine enemies, them thall he fling out, as our of the middle of a fling.

30 And it fhall come to pafs, when the LORD thall have done to my ford according to all the good that he hath spoken concerning thee, and shall have appointed thee ruler over Ifrael;

31 That this fhall be no grief unto thee, nor offence of heart unto my lord, either that thou haft thed blood caufélefs, or that my lord hath avenged himfeli: but when the LORD fhall have dealt well with my lord, then remember thine handmaid.

32 And David faid to Abigail, Bleffed be the LORD God of Ifrael, which fent thee this day to meet me:

33 And bleffed be thy advice, and bleffed be thou, which haft kept me this day from coming to bed blood, and from avenging my felf with mine own hand.

34 For in very deed, as the LORD God of Ifrael liveth, which hath kept me back from hurting thee, except thou hadft harted and come to meet me, furely there had not been left unto Nabal, by the morning light, any that pineth against the wall.

35 So David received of her hand that which the had brought him, and faid unto her, Go up in peace to thine houfe; fee, I have hearkened to thy voice, and have ac cepted the perfon.

36And Abigail came to Nabal; and, behold, he held a reaft in his houfe like the feaft of a king; and Nabal's heart was nierry within him, or he was very drunken: wherefore the tol 1 him nothing, lefs or more, until the morning light.

37 But it came to pafs in the morning, when the wine was gone out of Nabal, and his wife had told him thefe things, that his heart died within him, and he became as a fone.

38 And it came to pafs about ten days after, that the LORD fmote Nabal, that he died.

39 And when David heard that Nabal was dead, he faid, Bleed be the LORD, that hath pleaded the Laufe of my reproach from the hand of Nabal, and hath kept his fervant from evil: for the LORD hath returned the wickedness of Nabal upon his own head. And David fent and commused with Abigail, to take her to him to wife.

41 And the arofe, and bowed herfelt on er face to the earth, and faid, Behold, let thine handmaid be a fervant to wash the feet of the fervants of my lord.

42 And Abigail hafted, and arofe, and rode upon an afs, with five damfels of her's that. went after her; and the went after the mef fengers of David, and became his wife.

43 David alfo took Ahinoam of Jezreel and they were alfo both of them his wives. 44 But Saul had given Michal his daugh ter, David's wife, to Phalti the son of Laith, which was of Gallim.

2 Then Saul arole, and went down to the wilderness of Ziph, having three thoufand chofen men of Ifrael with him, to feek David in the wilderness of Ziph.

3 And Saul pitched in the hill of Hachilah, which is betore Jefhimon by the way. But David abode in the wildernefs, and he faw that Saul came after him into the wilder nefs.

4 David therefore fent out fpies, and understood that Saul was come in very deed. 5 And David arofe, and came to the place where Saul had pitched: and David beheld the place where Saul lay, and Abner the fon of Ner, the captain of his hoft; and Saul lay in the trench, and the people pitched round about him.

6 Then anfwered David and faid to Ahimelech the Hittite, and to Abishai the fon of Zeruiah, brother to Jeab, faying, Who will go down with me to Saul to the camp? And Abithai faid, I will go down with thee.

So David and Abishai came to the peo ple by night and, behold, Saul lay fleeping within the trench, and his fpear fuck in the ground at his bolfter: but Abner and the peo ple lay round about him.

8 Then faid Abishai to David, God hath delivered thine enemy into thine hand this day: now therefore let me fmite him, I pray thee, with the fear, even to the earth at once, and I will not fmite him the fecond time.

9 And David faid unto Abishai, Destroy him not for who can Aretch forth his hand against the LORD's anointed, and be guiltless! 10 David faid turthermore As the LORD liveth, the LORD thall fmite him; or his day fhall come to die; or he shall defcend into battle, and persth."

11 The LORD torbid that I fhould ftretch forth mine hand against the LORD's anointed; but, I pray thee, take thou now the spear that is at his bolfter, and the crufe or water, and let us go.

12 So David took the fpear and the cruse of water from Saul's boiffer; and they gat them away, and no man faw it, nor knew it, neither awaked for they were all afcep because a deep fleep from the LORD was fal 'len upon them.

139 Then

David pacifieth Saul.

Chap. xxvii, xxviii. 13 Then David went over to the other fide, and flood on the top of an hill atar off; a great space being between them:

14 And David cried to the people, and to Abner the fon of Ner, faying, Anfwereft thou not Abner? Then Abner anfwered and faid, Who are thou that crieft to the king?

15 And David faid to Abner, Art not thou a valiant man and who is like to thee in Ifrael? Wherefore then haft thou not kept thy lord the king? For there came one of the people in to deftroy the king thy lord.

16 This thing is not good that thou haft done. As the LORD liveth, ye are worthy to die, because ye have not kept your mafter, the LORD's anointed. And now fee where the king's fpear is, and the crufe of water that was at his bolster.

17. And Saul knew David's voice, and faid, Is this thy voice, my fon David? And David faid, It is my voice, my lord, O king.

18 And he faid, Wherefore doth my lord thus purfue after his fervant? for what have I done! or what evil is in mine-hand?

19 Now therefore, I pray thee, let my lord the king hear the words of his fervant. If the LORD have stirred thee up against me, let him accept an offering; but it they be the children of men, curfed be they before the LORD; for they have driven me out this day from abiding in the inheritance of the LORD, fay. ing, Go, ferve other gods.

20 Now therefore, let not my blood fall to the earth before the face of the IORD; for the king of Ifrael is come out to ek a flea, as when one doth hunt a partridge in the mountains.

21 Then faid Saul, I have finned: return, my fon David: for I will no more do thee harm, because my foul was precious in thine eyes this day, behold, I have played the fool, and have erred exceedingly.

22 And David anfwered and faid, Behold the king's fear! and let one of the young

men come over and fetch it.

23 The LORD render to every man his

righteousness and his faithfulness; for the LORD delivered thee into my hand to-day, but I would not stretch forth mine hand against the LORD'S anointed.

24 And, behold, as thy life was much fet by this day in mine eyes, fo let my life be much tet by in the eyes of the LORD, and let him deliver me out of all tribulation."

25 Then Saul faid to David, Bletfed be thou, my fon David: thou shalt both do great things, and alfo fhalt ftill prevail. So David went on his way, and Saul returned to his place.

CHA P. XXVII.

Saul, bearing Iavid to be in Gath, Jeeketh no more for him. s David beggeth Ziklag of Achish.

AND David faid in his heart, I shall now perith one day by the hand of Saul: there is nothing better for me than that I fhould fpeedily efcape into the land of the Philistines; and Saul thall defpair of me, to feek me any more in any coat of Ifrael: fo fhall I escape out of his hand.

2 And David arofe, and he paffed over with the fix hundred men that were with his unto Achith, the fon of Maoch, king of Gath.

4 And it was told Saul that David was fled to Gath: and he fought no more again for him. 5 And David faid unto Achith, If I have now found grace in thine eyes, let them give me a place in fome town in the country, that 1 may dwell there: for why should thy fervant dwell in the royal city with thee?

6 Then Achish gave him Ziklag that day: wherefore Ziklag pertaineth unto the kings of Judah unto this day.

7 And the time that David dwelt in the country of the Philistines was a full year and tour months.

8And David and his men went up, and invaded the Gethurites, and the Gezrites, and the Amalekites: for thofe nations were of old the inhabitants of the land, as thou goeft to Shur, even unto the land of Fgypt.

9 And David fmote the land, and left neither man nor woman alive, and took away the sheep, and the oxen, and the affes, and the camels, and the apparel, and returned and came to Achith.

10 And Achith faid, Whither have ye made a road to day? And David faid, Against the fouth of Judah, and againft the fouth of the Jerahmeelites, and against the south of the Kenites.

11 And David faved neither man nor woman alive, to bring tidings to Gath, faying, Let they should tell on us, faying, So did David, and fo will be his manner all the while he dwelleth in the country of the

Philiftines.

12 And Achish believed David, faying, He hath made his people rael utterly to abhor him; therefore he thall be my fervant for ever.

2 And David faid to Achifh, Surely thou fhalt know what thy fervant can do. And Achifh faid to David, Therefore will I make thee keeper of mine head for ever.

5 And when Saul faw the host of the Philiftines, he was afraid, and his heart greatly trembled.

6 And when Saul enquired of the LORD, the Los anfwered him not, neither by dreams, nor by Urim, nor by prophets.

7 Then tai Saul unto his fervants, Seek me a woman that hath a familiar fpirit, that I may go to her, and enquire of her. And his fervants faid to him, Behold, there is a

10 And Saul fware to her by the LORD, faying, As the LORD liveth, there shall no punishment happen to thee for this thing. 11 Then faid the woman, Whom all bring up unto thee? And he faid, Bring me up Samuel.

13 And the king faid unto her, Be not afraid for what faweit thou! And the wo man faid unto Saul, I faw gods afcending out of the earth.

14 And he faid unto her, What form is he of? And the faid, An old man cometh up; and he is covered with a mancie. And Saul perceived that it was Samuel, and he stooped with bis face to the ground, and bowed himself.

15 And Samuel faid to Saul, Why haft. thou difquieted me, to bring me up? And Saul anfwered, I am fore diftreifed: for the Philistines make war againft me, and God is departed from me, and anfwereth me no more, neither by prophets, nor by dreams: therefore I have called thee, that thou mayeft make known unto me what I shall do.

16 Then faid Samuel, Wherefore then doft thou ask of me, feeing the LORD is departed from thee, and is become thine enemy?"

17 And the LORD hath done to him as he fpake by me: for the LORD hath rent the kingdom out of thine hand, and given it to thy neighbour, even to David;

18 Because thou obeyedft not the voice of the LORD, nor executedft his fierce wrath upon Amalek, therefore hath the LORD done this thing unto thee this day.

:

19 Moreover, the LORD will alfo deliver Ifrael with thee into the hand of the Philiftines and to-morrow halt thou and thy fons be with me: the LORD alfo fhall deHiver the hoft of Ifrael into the hand of the Philistines.

20 Then Saul fell ftraightway all along on the earth, and was fore afraid, because of the words of Samuel and there was no strength in him; for he had eaten no bread all the day, nor all the night.

5 And David faid unto the young man that told him, How knowest thou that Saul and Jonathan his fon be dead!

6 And the young man that told him faid, As I happened by chance upon mount Gil boa, behold, Saul leaned upon his fpear; and 15, the chariots and hor.emen followed hard after him.

7 And when he looked behind him, he faw me, and called unto me: and I answered, Here am I.

TO So I ftood upon him, and flew him, be cause I was sure that he could not live after that he was allen; and I took the crown that sa upon his head, and the bracelet that was on his arm, and have brought them hither unto my lord.

11 Then David took hold on his clothes,

16 And David faid unto him, Thy blood be upon thy head: for thy mouth hath testitied against thee, faying, I have flain the LORD's anointed.

17 And David lamented with this lamen. tation over Saul and over Jonathan his fon:

18 (Alfo he bade them teach the children of Judah the ufe of the bow; behold, it is written in the book of Jafher:)

22 From the blood of the flain, from he fat of the mighty, the bow of Jonathan turned not back, and the fword of Saul returned not empty.

23 Saul and Jonathan were lovely and plea. fant in their lives, and in their death they were not divided: they were fwitter than cagles, they were ftronger than lions.
