The prophet's fervent defire to confirm the church in God's promifes. 6 The minifters' office in preaching the gospel.

OR Zion's fake will I not hold my peace, and for Jerufalem's fake I will not rett, until the righteoufnefs thereof go forth as brightnefs, and the falvation thereof as a lamp that burneth.

2 And the Gentiles thall fee thy righteouf nefs, and all kings thy glory; and thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the LORD fhall name.

3 Thou fhalt alfo be a crown of glory in the hand of the LORD, and a royal diadem in the hand of thy God.

4 Thou shalt no more be termed Forfaken; neither fhall thy land any more be termed Defolate: but thou thalt be called Hephzi-bah, and thy land Beulah: for the LORD delighteth in thee, and thy land fhall be married.

5 For as a young man marrieth a virgin, Jothall thy fons marry thee: and as the bridegroom rejoiceth over the bride, so thall thy God rejoice over thee.

I have fet watchmen upon thy walls, O Jerufalem, which thall never hold their peace day nor night: ye that make mention of the LORD, keep not filence,

7. And give him no reft, till he establish, and till he make Jerufalem a praife in the earth.

8 The LORD hath fworn by his right hand, and by the arm of his ftrength, Surely I will no more give thy corn to be meat for thine enemies; and the fons of the stranger thall not drink thy wine, for the which thou haft laboured.

9 But they that have gathered it fhall eat it, and praife the LORD; and they that have brought it together thall drink it in the courts of my holinels.

10 Go through, go through the gates; prepare ye the way of the people; caft up, caft up the highway; gather out the stones; lift up a ftandard for the people.

11 Behold, the LORD hath proclaimed unto the end of the world, Say ye to the daughter of Zion, Behold, thy falvation cometh; behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him.

12 And they fhall call them, The holy people, The redeemed of the LORD: and thou Thalt be called, Sought out, A city not forfaken. CHAP. LXIII. Chrifi beweth who he is, z what his victory over his enemies, 7 and what his mercy toward bis church.

WHO is this that cometh from Fdom,

with died garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, travelling in the greatnefs of his ftrength! I that speak in righteoufnefs, mighty to fave.

2 Wherefore art thou red in thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in

the winefat?

3. I have trodden the wineprefs alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I will tread them in mine anger, and trample them in my fury; and their blood thall oe fprinkled upon my garments, and I will ftain all my raiment.

4 For the day of vengeance is in mine heart, and the year of my redeemed is come.

Chriff's power and mercy.

5 And I looked, and there was none to help, and I wondered that there was none to up hold: therefore mine own arm brought fal vation unto me; and my fury it upheld me.

6 And I will tread down the people in mine anger, and make them drunk in my fury, and I will bring down their strength to the earth.

7¶I will mention the loving-kindnesses of the LORD, and the praifes of the LORD, according to all that the LORD hath be ftowed on us, and the great goodness toward the house of Ifrael, which he hath bestowed on them according to his mercies, and according to the multitude of his lovingkindnesses.

8 For he faid, Surely they are my people, children that will not lie fo he was their Saviour.

9 In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his prefence faved them: in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; and he bare them, and carried them all the days of old.

10 But they rebelled, and vexed his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them.

11 Then he remembered the days of old, Mofes, and his people, faying, Where is he that brought them up out of the fea with the thepherd of his flock? where is he that put his holy Spirit within him?

12 That led them by the right hand of Mofes with his glorious arm, dividing the water before them, to make himself an everlafting name?

13 That led them through the deep, as an horfe in the wilderness, that they should not ftumble?

14 As a beaft goeth down into the valley, the Spirit of the LORD caufed him to reft: fo didit thou lead thy people, to make thyself a glorious name.

15 Look down from heaven, and behold from the habitation of thy holiness and of thy glory: where is thy zeal and thy ftrength, the founding of thy bowels, and of thy mercies toward me? are they restrained?

16 Doubtlefs thou art our father, though Abraham be ignorant of us, and Ifrael acknowledge us not: thou, O LORD, arr our Father, our Redeemer; thy name is from everlasting.

170 LORD, why haft thou made us to err from thy ways, and hardened our heart from thy fear! Return for thy fervants' fake, the tribes of thine inheritance.

18 The people of thy holiness have possessed it but a little while: our adverfaries have

trodden down thy fanctuary.

19 We are thine: thou never bareft rule over them; they were not called by thy name. СНА Р. LXIV.

The Gentiles called. 2 the Fens rejected. 17 The bleedfate of the new Jerufalem. I AM fought of them that alked not for me: I am found of them that fought me not: Ilaid, Behold me, behold me, unto a nation that was not called by my name.

2 I have fpread out my hands all the day unto a rebellious people, which walketh in a way that was not good, after their own thoughts;

3 A people that provoketh me to anger continually to my face; that facrificeth in gardens, and burneth incense upon a'tars of brick;

4 Which remain among the graves, and 1odge in the monuments, which eat fwine's flesh, and broth of abominable things is in

their veffels.

Which fay, Stand by thyfelf, come not near to me; for I am holier than thou. These are a fmoke in my nofe, a fire that burneth all the day.

6 Eehold, it is written before me: I will not keep filence, but will recompence, even recomence into their bofom,

7 Your iniquities, and the iniquities of your fathers together, faith the LORD, which have burned incenfe upon the mountains, and blafphemed me upon the hills: therefore will I measure their former work into their bofom.

Thus faith the LORD, As the new wine is found in the clutter, and one faith, Destroy it not; for a blething is in it: fo will I do for my fervants' fakes, that I may not deftroy them all.

And I will bring forth a feed out of Jacob, and out of Judah an inheritor of my mountains and mine elect thall inherit it, and my fervants hall dwell there.

10 And Sharon shall be a fold of flocks, and

me.

11 But ye are they that forfake the LORD, that forget my holy mountain, that prepare a table for that troop, and that furnish the drink offering unto that number.

12 Therefore will I number yeu to the fword, and ye thall all bow down to the flaughter: because when I called, ye did not antwer; when 1 ipake, ye did not hear; but did evil before mine eyes, and did choote that wherein I delighted not.

13 Therefore thus faith the Lord Gop, Bc. hold, my servants fhall eat, but ye shall be hungry: behold, my servants fhall drink, but ye thall be thirty: behold, my fervants shall rejoice, but ye thali be ashamed:

14 Behold, my fervants thall fing for joy of heart, but ye shall cry for forrow of heart, and thall howl for vexation of spirit.

15 And ye thall leave your name for a curie unto my chofen: for the Lord God thall flay thee, and call his fervants by an.

other name:

16 That he who blefleth himself in the earth, thall blefs himfelt in the God of truth; and he that fweareth in the earth, fhall (wear by the God of truth: because the former troubles are forgotten, and because they are hid frem mine eyes.

17 For, behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former fhall not be re membered, nor come into mind.

18 But be ye glad and rejoice for ever in that which I create: for, behold, I create je

rufalem a rejoicing, and her people a joy

19 And I will rejoice in Jerufalem, and joy in my people: and the voice of weeping thall be no more heard in her, nor the voice of crying.

20 There fhall be no more thence an infant of days, nor an old man that hath not filled his days: for the child shall die an hundred years old; but the sinner, being an hundred years old, fhall be accurfed.

21 And they shall build houses, and inhabit them; and they fhall plant vineyards, and eat the fruit of them.

22 They thall not build, and another inha bit; they fhall not plant, and another eat: for as the days of a tree are the days of my people, and mine elect fhall long enjoy the work of their hands.

23 They fhall not labour in vain, nor bring forth for trouble; for they are the feed of the bleffed of the LORD, and their offspring with them.

24 And it fhall come to país, that before they call, I will anfwer; and while they are yer fpeaking, I will hear.

25 The wolf and the lamb fhall feed toge ther, and the lion shall eat ftraw like the bul lock: and duft ball be the terpent's meat. They thall not hurt nor deftroy in all my holy mountain, faith the LORD.

made, and all those things have been, faith the LORD: but to this man will I look, even to him that is poor and of a contrite spirit, and trembleth at my word.

3 He that killeth an ox, is as if he flew a man; he that facrificeth a lamb, as if he cut off a dog's neck; he that offereth an obla. tion, as if he offered fwine's blood: he that burneth iscene, as if he bletfed an idol. Yea, they have chofen their own ways, and their foul delighteth in their abominations.

4 1 alfo will choose their delusions, and will bring their tears upon them; becaufe when I called, none did anfwer; when I fpake, they did not hear: but they did evil betore mine eyes, and chofe that in which I delighted not. Hear the word of the LORD, ye that tremble at his word; Your brethren that hated you, that call you out for my name's fake, faid, Let the LORD be glorified, but he thall appear to your joy, and they fhall be ashamed.

6 A voice of noise from the city, a voice from the temple, a voice of the LORD that rendereth recompenfe to his enemies.

10 Rejoice ye with Jerufalem, and be glad with her, all ye that love her: rejoice for joy with her, all ye that mourn for her:

11 That ye may fuck, and be fatisfied with the breafts of her confolations; that ye may milk out, and be delighted with the abundance of her glory.

12 For thus faith the LORD, Behold, I will extend peace to her like a river, and the glory of the Gentiles like a flowing ftream: then thall ye fuck, ye shall be borne upon ber fides, and be dandled upon her knees.

13 As one whom his mother comforteth, fo will I comfort you; and ye shall be comforted in Jerufalem.

to the Church. 14 And when ye fee this, your heart thali rejoice, and your bones fhall fourth like an herb: and the hand of the LORD shall be known toward his fervants and bis muignation toward his enemies.

15 For, behold, the LORD will come with fite, and with his chariots like a whirlwind, to render his anger with fury, and his rebuke with names of fire.

15 For by fire, and by his fward will the LORD plead with all fieih; and the fiain of the LORD thall be many.

17 Tacy that fauctify themfelves, and pr rify themselves in the gardens, behind one tree in the midft, eating fwine's deih, and the abomination, and the mouse, hail be confumed together, faith the Lord.

18 For I know their works, and their thoughts: it shall come, that I will gather all nations and tongues; and they thail come, and fee my glory.

19 And I will fet a sign among them, and I will fend thofe that cfcape of them unto the nations, to Tarthith, Pul, and Lud, that draw the bow, to Tubal, and Javan, the ifles atar of, that have not heard my fame, neither have feen my glory; and they shall declare my glory among the Gentiles.

20 And they hall bring all your brethren for an offering unto the LORD, Out of all na tiens, upon horfes, and in chariots, and in lit. ters, and upon mules, and upon fwitt beafts, to my holy mountain Jerufalem, faith the LORD, as the children of frael bring an of fering in a clean vessel into the house of the LORD.

21 And I will alfo take of them for pricfts, and for Levites, faith the LORD.

22 For as the new heavens, and the new earth, which I will make, fhall remain before me, faith the LORD, fo fhall your feed and your name remain.

23 And it fhail come to pass, that from one new moon to another, and from one fabbath to another, fhall all fleth come to worthip before me, faith the LORD.

24 And they fhall go forth, and look upon the carcafes of the men that have tranfgreffed against me: for their worm thall not die, neither thall their fire be quench ed; and they shall be an abhorring unto all feih.

CHAP. I. The calling of Jeremiah: 11 his wifion: 15 his meage against Judab: 17 God promifeth to afft bim. THE words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, of the priefts that were in Anathoth in the land of Benjamin:

z To whom the word of the LORD came in the days of Jofiah the fon of Amon king of Judah, in the thirteenth year of his reign.

3 It came alfo in the days of Jehoiakim the fon of Jofiah king of Judah, unto the end of the eleventh year of Zedekiah the fon of Jofiah king of Judah, unto the car rying away of Jerufalem captive in the fifth month.

4 Then the word of the LORD came un to me, faying,

s Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camett forth out of the womb I fanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations.

6 Then faid I, Ah, Lord God! behold, I cannot fpeak: for I am a child.

But the LORD faid unto me, Say not, I am a child: for thou thalt go to all that fhall fend thee, and whatfoever I command thee thou shalt (peak.

8 Be not afraid of their faces: for I am with thee to deliver thee, faith the LORD.

9 Then the LORD put forth his hand, and touched my mouth. And the LORD faid unto me, Behold, I have put my words in thy

mouth.

11 Moreover, the word or the LORD came unto me, faying, Jeremiah, what feett thou? And I faid, I fee a rod of an almond

tree.

12 Then faid the LORD unto me, Thou haft well feen: for I will hatten my word to perform it.

13 And the word of the LORD came unto me the second time, faying, What feett thoa? And I faid, I fee a feething pot; and the face thereor is toward the north.

14 Then the LORD faid unto me, Out of the north an evil thall break forth upon ail the inhabitants of the land.

15 For, lo, I will call all the families of the kingdoms of the north, faith the LORD; and they hall come, and they thail fet every one his throne at the entering of the gates of Je rufalem, and against all the walls thereof round about, and against all the cities of Judah. 16 And 1 will utter my judgments against them, touching all their wickedness, who have torfaken me, and have burned incenfe unto other gods, and worthipped the works

of their own hands.

17Thou therefore gird up thy loins, and arife, and speak unto them all that I command thee: be not difmayed at their faces, le I contound thee before them.

18 For, behold, I have made thee this day a defenced city, and an iron pillar, and bra fen walls against the whole land, against the kings of Judah, against the princes thereof, against the priests thereof, and again the people of the land.

19 And they shall fight against thee; but they shall not prevail against thee, for I am with thee, faith the LORD, to deliver thee. CHAP. 11.

3 Ifrael was holinefs unto the 1.0RD, and the first truits of his increase: all that devoar him thall offend; evil fhall come upon

4 Hear ye the word of the Lown, O houfe of Jacob, and all the families of the house of Ifrael:

Thus faith the LoxD, What iniquity have your fathers found in me, that they are gone far from me, and have walked after vanity, and are become vain!

6 Neither faid they, Where is the LORD that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, that led us through the wilderness, through a land of deferts and of pits, through a land of drought, and of the shadow or death, through a land that no man paffed through, and where no man dwelt?

7 And I brought you into a plentiful country, to eat the fruit thereof, and the goodnefs thereof; but when ye entered ye defiled my land, and made mine heritage an abomination.

1 Hath a nation changed their gods, which are yet no gois? But my people have changed their glory for that which doth not profit.

12 Be astonished, O ye heavens, at this, and be horribly atraid, be ye very defolate, faith the LORD.

13 For my people have committed two evils; they have torfaken ine the 1ountain of living waters, and hewed them out cifterns, broken cuterns, that can hold no water.

14 Is Ifrael a fervant? Is he a home bort flave! Why is he fpoiled!

15 The young lions roared upon him, and yelled, and they made his land warte: his cities are burned without inhabitant.

16 Alfo the children of Noph and Tahapanes have broken the crown of thy head.

17 Hart thou not procure this unto thy. felf, in that thou haft forfaken the LORD thy God, when he led thee by the way?

18 And now what haft thou to do in the way of Egypt, to drink the waters of Sihor! Or what halt thou to do in the way of Afly. ria, to drink the waters of the river!

19 Thine own wickedness fhall correct thee, and thy backfliding thall reprove thee: know therefore and fee that it is an evil thing and bitter, that thou haft forfaken the LORD thy God, and that my fear is not in thee, faith the Lord GoD of hosts.

25 Withhold thy toot from being unthod, and thy throat from thirt: but thou faidit, There is no hope: no; for I have loved ftrangers, and after them will I go.

26 As the thiet is athamed when he is found, fo is the houfe of Ifrael ashamed; they, their kings, their princes, and their priefts, and their prophets,

27 Saying to a flock, Thou art my father; and to a ftone, Thou haft brought me torth: for they have turned their back unto me, and not their face: but in the time of their trouble they will fay, Arife, and fave us.

The promises of the gospel

Chap. ii.

2 But where are thy gods that thou haft made thee? Let them arife, if they can fave thee in the time of thy trouble: for according to the number of thy cities are thy gods, O judah.

29 Wherefore will ye plead with me? Ye all have tranfgreifed against me, faith the LORD.

30 In vain have I fmitten your children; they received no correction: your own fword hath devoured your prophets, like a destroy. ing lion.

31 Ogeneration, fee ye the word of the LORD: Have I been a wil leraefs unto Ifrael? a land of darkness? Wherefore fay my people, We are lords; we will come no more unto thee?

33 Why trimmeit thou thy way to feek love? Therefore haft thou alfo taught the wicked ones thy ways.

16 Why gaddeft thou about fo much to change thy way? Thou alfo thalt be ashamed of Egypt, as thou wait afhamed of Affyria. 37 Yea, thou shalt go forth from him, and thire hands upon thine head: for the LORD hath rejected thy confidences, and thou shalt not profper in them.

But thou haft played the harlot with many lovers; yet return again to me, faith the LORD. 2 Lift up thine eyes unto the high places, and fee where thou haft not been lien with. In the ways haft thou fat for them, as the A rabian in the wilderness; and thou hart polJuted the land with thy whoredoms and with thy wickedness.

Therefore the fhowers have been with holden, and there hath been no latter rain; and thou hadit a whore's forehead, tuou refusedit to be ashamed.

4 Wilt thou not from this time cry unto me, My father, thou art the guide of my youth!

5. Will he referve bis anger for ever! will he keep it to the end? Behold, thou hatt fpo. ken and done evil things as thou couldeft. 6 The LORD faid alfo unto me, in the days of Jofiah the king, Haft, thou feen that which backfliding Ifrael hath done? She is gone up upon every high mountain, and un. der every green tree, and there hath played the harlot,

7 And I faid after the had done all these things, Turn thou unto me. But the returned not. And her treacherous fifter Judah faw it. 8 And I faw, when for all the caufes whereby backiliding Ifrael committed adul. tery I had put her away, and given her a bill of divorce; yet her treacherous fifter

9 And it came to pass through the light. nefs of her whoredom, that the denied the land, and committed adultery with ftones and with flocks.

10 And yet for all this her treacherous fitter Judah hath not turned unto me with her whole heart, but teignedly, faith the LORD.

11 And the LORD faid unto me, The backiding Ifrael hath juftihed herfet: more than treacherous judah.

12 Go and proclaim thefe words toward the north, and fay, Return, thou backsliding Ifrael, faith the LORD; and I will not caufe mine anger to fall upon you: for I am mercitul, faith the LORD, and I will not keep anger for ever.

13 Only acknowledge thine iniquity, that thou half tranfgreiled against the LORD thy God, and hatt fcattered thy ways to the ftrangers under every green tree, and ye have not obeyed my voice, faith the LORD.

14 Turn, O backfliding cha.dren, faith the LORD; for I am married unto you: and I will take you one of a city, and two of a family, and I will bring you to Zion:

15 And I will give you pators according to mine heart, which thali teed you with knowledge and understanding.

16 And thall come to pafs, when ye be multiplied and increased in the land, in thofe days, faith the LORD, they shall fay no more, The ark of the covenant of the LORD: neither had it come to mind: neither fhall they remember it; neither thail they vifit it: neither thall that be done any more.

17 At that time they thall call Jerusalem the throne of the LORD, and all the nations thall be gathered unto it, to the name of the LORD, to Jerufalem: neither shall they walk any more after the imagination of their evil heart.

18 In thofe days the houfe of Judah fhall walk with the houfe of Ifrael, and they thall come together out of the land of the north to the land that I have given for an inheritance unto your fathers.

19 But I faid, How shall I put thee among the children, and give thee a pleafant land, a goodly heritage of the hoits of nations! And I faid, Thou shalt call me, My father; and thait not turn away from me.

20 Surely as a wise treacherously departcth from her husband, fo have ye dealt treacheroully with me, O house of Ifrael, faith the LORD.

21 A voice was heard upon the high places, weeping and fupplications of the children of Ifrael: for they have perverted their way, and they have togotten the LORD their God.

22 Return, ye backlining children, and will heal your backflidings. Behold, we come unto thee; for thou art the LORD our God.

23 Truly in vam is falvation hoped for from the hills, and from the multitude of mountains: truly in the LORD our God is the falvation of Ifrael.
