CHAP. I. God's fevere judgments against Judah for divers fins.

THE word of the LORD which came unto Zephaniah the fon of Cufhi, the fon of Gedaliah, the fon of Amariah, the fon of Hizkiah, in the days of Jofiah the fon of Amon, king of Judah.

2 I will utterly confume all things from off the land, faith the LORD.

3 I will confume man and beat; I will confume the towls of the heaven, and the fishes of the fea, and the tumbling blocks with the wicked; and I will cut off man from off the land, faith the LORD.

4 I will alfo stretch out mine hand upon Judah, and upon the inhabitants of Jerufalem; and I will cut off the remnant of Baal from this place, and the name of the Chemarims with the priests;

5 And them that worthip the hott of heaven upon the houfetops; and them that worthip and that fwear by the LORD, and that fwear by Malcham;

6 And them that are turned back from the LORD; and thofe that have not fought the LORD, nor enquired for him.

7 Hold thy peace at the prefence of the Lord GOD: for the day of the LORD is at hand: for the LORD hath prepared a facrifice, he hath bid his guefts.

8 And it thall come to pafs in the day of the LORD's facrifice, that I will punish the princes, and the king's children, and all fuch as are clothed with ftrange apparel.

9 In the fame day alfo will I punish all thofe that leap on the thresholt, which fill their maiter's houses with violence and deceit.

10 And it thall come to país in that day,

faith the LORD, that there shall be the noise of a cry from the fifh gate, and an howling from the fecond, and a great crashing from the hills.

II Howl, ye inhabitants of Maktech, for all the merchant people are cut down; all they that bear filver are cut off.

12 And it thall come to pafs at that time, that I will fearch Jerufalem with candles, and punish the men that are fettled on their lees: that fay in their heart, The LORD will not do good, neither will he do evil.

13 Therefore their goods fhall become a booty, and their houfes a defolation: they shall alfo build houfes, but not inhabit them; and they shall plant vineyards, but not drink the wine thereof.

14 The great day of the LORD is near, it is near, and hafteth greatly, even the voice of the day of the LORD: the mighty man shall cry there bitterly.

15 That day is a day of wrath, a day of trouble and diftrefs, a day of waftenefs and defolation, a day of darknefs and gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness,

16 A day of the trumpet and alarm against the fenced cities, and against the high towers.

17 And I will bring diftrefs upon men, that they shall walk like blind men, because they have finned against the LORD: and their blood fhall be poured out as dut, and their fleth as the dung.

18 Neither their filver nor their gold fhall be able to deliver them in the day of the LORD's wrath; but the whole land shall be de voured by the fire of his jealousy: for he thall make even a speedy riddance of all them that dwell in the land.

3 Seek ye the LORD, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; feek righteoufnefs, feek meeknefs: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the LORD'S anger.

4 For Gaza thall be forfaken, and Ahkelon a defolation: they fhall drive out Athdod at the noon day, and Ekron fhall be rooted up.

5 Woe unto the inhabitants of the fea coafts, the nation of the Cherethites! the word of the LORD is againft you; O Caaan, the land of the Philistines, I will even destroy thee, that there fhall be no inhabitant.

6 And the fea coaft fhall be dwellings and cottages for thepherds, and folds for flocks.

2 She obeyed not the voice; the received not correction; the trufted not in the LORD; the drew not near to her God.

3 Her princes within her are roaring lions; her judges are evening wolves; they gnaw not the bones till the morrow.

4 Her prophets are light and treacherous perfons: her priests have polluted the fanctu ary, they have done violence to the law.

7 I faid, Surely thou wilt fear me, thou wilt receive instruction; fo their dwelling should not be cut off, howfoever I punished them: but they rofe early, and corrupted all their doings.

8Therefore wait ye upon me, faith the LORD, until the day that I rife up to the prey: for my determination is to gather the nations, that I may affemble the kingdoms, to pour upon them mine indignation, even all my fierce anger: for all the earth thall be devoured with the fire of my jealousy.

9 For then will I turn to the people a pare language, that they may all call upon the name of the LORD, to ferve him with one confent.

10 From beyond the rivers of Ethiopia my fuppliants, even the daughter of my difperf ed, thall bring mine offering.

11 f that day thalt thou not be afhamed for all thy doings, wherein thou haft tranfgreffed against me: for then I will take away out of the midst of thee them that rejoice in thy pride, and thou shalt no more be haughty because of my holy mountain.

12 I will alfo leave in the midst of thee an afflicted and poor people, and they fhall truft in the name of the LORD.

13 The remnant of Ifrael fhall not do iniquity, nor fpeak lies; neither fhall a deceitful tongue be found in their mouth: for they shall feed and lie down, and none fhall make them afraid.

14 Sing, O daughter of Zion; shout, O Ifrael; be glad and rejoice with all the heart, O daughter of Jerufalem.

15 The LORD hath taken away thy judg ments, he hath caft out thine enemy: the king of Ifracl, even the LORD, is in the midft of thee: thou shalt not fee evil any more.

16 In that day it shall be faid to Jerufalem, Fear thou not; and to Zion, Let not thine hands be flack.

The LORD thy God in the midft of thee is mighty; he will fave, he will rejoice over thee with joy; he will rett in his love, he will joy over thee with finging.
