Parton, however, claims that he was born in Union County, N. C., which is very near the South Carolina line. (c) Jefferson was declared by his biographer, Randall, to be a Christian, although not a member of any religious sect. (d) President Johnson was a Christian, although not a church member. She was the divorced wife of Captain Robards, (a) The present Democratic party claims to be the lincal successor of the first Republican party, and to have been founded by President Jefferson. (b) There was little party organization at the time of the election of John Quincy Adams. He claimed to be a Republican, but was really a Federalist. Cleveland was christened Stephen Grover, but dropped the Stephen. W. H Harrison was the oldest man elected President, and Grant the youngest, but Roosevelt was the youngest to become President. THE PRESIDENTIAL SUCCESSION. Succession to the Presidency is fixed by the acts of the Forty-ninth Congress, Chapter IV., which provide that in case of the removal, death, resignation or inability of both the President and the Vice-President, then the Secretary of State shall act as President until the disability of the President or Vice-President is removed or a President is elected. If there be no Secretary of State, then the Secretary of the Treasury will act; and the order of succession is: Secretary of War, Attorney-General, Postmaster-General, Secretary of the Navy and the Secretary of the Interior. The Secretary of Agriculture cannot succeed to the Presidency, as his office was created after the passage of this act This act applies only to such Cabinet officers as shall have been appointed by the consent of the Senate and are eligible under the Constitution to the Presidency. Upon taking office, the acting President must convene Congress, if it is not at that time in session, in extraordinary session, giving notice of twenty days. *Appointed by the President and confirmed by the Senate, but did not act.
