The following table shows the number of foreign-born persons in the United States, by States and Territories and country of birth. This is one of the most interesting tables in the vital statistics department of the census. It shows at a glance the countries from which the largest number of immigrants to this country come, and the sections of the United States to which they go. It will be noticed that the men from the countries where skilled labor is common, or where farming is an important occupation, seek the States of smaller cities, or agricultural sections, while those from the south of Europe seem to center in the greater cities.
