During the year great strides were made by the National Hunt and Steeplechase Association in the improvement of the branch of the sport of which it has assumed charge. A few years ago jumping races were scorned by the majority of the racing public, and with good reason. The horsemen, too, were inclined to view them with disfavor, but now they have been won over again. Some of the most prominent stables in the country to-day boast of a few horses given over to the hurdles or the field. Best of the many features that have been developed with the return to favor of cross-country racing is the number of really clever horsemen from the gentlemen rider division who have shown a disposition to try their hands in public contests. Mr. Page. Mr. Clark, Mr. Holland, Mr. Harris, Mr. Holloway and Mi. Hayes have carried off the honors in the East, but they are only a few of many. In one race two gentlemen came from Canada to ride. Much of the improvement in this class of racing has been due to the fact that the old idea of turning over to the jumps only those hoises that are useless for the flat, has been abandoned. Big prices are now paid for young horses that are sound, solely with the idea of schooling them for the field. Another very promising development is the offering of purses at the State fairs for the jumpers. This has been done with the idea of developing the game among the farmers. Among those chiefly responsible for restoring to favor this class of sport are Mr. Thomas Hitchcock, Mr. J. G. Follansbee. Mr. H S. Page, Mr. F. Ambrose Clark, Mr. Harry S. Smith, Mr. F. R. Hitchcock, Mr. J. E. Widener, Mr. Chamblet and many others. The National Hunt and Steeplechase Association has also received hearty co-operation from the Canadian Hunt Association, and this has been of great value to them in their efforts in purification. |
