HIS BOOK is intended to do for the student, the business man, the writer, for all active citizenship, the work which the MAP does for the traveller. When this great country was in its primitive condition, geographical knowledge was a matter of individual study, and of memory. The oldest Indian knew by heart the deer paths, the salt licks, the places for crossing dangerous streams or descending deep canyons in time of danger or migration. This word-of-mouth geography was taught by the old warriors to the young men, and taught by them in turn to their children. The oldest and most learned Indian could command at best a knowledge of a few miles or a few scores of miles of the surrounding country. To-day no man relies on memory for his knowledge of geography. Any child of ten with a map spread out in front of him possesses more knowledge of that old Indian's hunting territory than he and all his brothers possessed between them. Except for purposes of mental discipline, there is no more memorizing of geographical detail. Every individual, in a moment, having access to a few maps, can put his finger on any detail of this earth's divisions, or can at a glance survey its broad and general plan. As the map with its ready information has replaced the old-fashioned system of geographical memory, so this work is intended to replace the always inefficient supplies of various knowledge that men carry in their minds. Condensed, methodically arranged, we endeavor to present in this volume an Almanac, an Atlas, and a sufficient store of encyclopedic information. A man in business, or otherwise actively engaged in modern civilization, needs a knowledge of facts, statistics, etc., even more than the old Indian needed a knowledge of paths through the woods. The facts which all men need in every-day lives are here gathered together. No human memory was ever great enough to retain accurately cven a small fraction of the knowledge which this book contains. Between these covers a condensation of important knowledge lies at the command of the busiest man, or the poorest memory. This volume, the first edition of this work, will be renewed from year to year, with statistics, new discoveries, maps and all other information carefully and conscientiously brought up to date. The object of this book is to give every man easy access to the knowledge which he requires from day to day. Every effort will be made to insure above all things accuracy and completeness in this condensed map of essential knowledge. ANY reader of this Almanac who may take the trouble to write letters of suggestion or of criticism will have the thanks of the editor and will perhaps render service to a great reading public.
