The Reason of my defiring this is, a Prospect of a new Edition of Marshall.---A Bookfeller is inclined to print one, and fell it at Half a Crown Price; I believe encouraged thereto by my Recommendation of it. The Recommendation has been printed in our Northampton News Paper, and immediately there was a Demand for twenty-three of your Abridgments. But the Printer could not procure enough to supply the Demand. Mr. K defires you will fend a fresh Supply to him. In the greatest Hafle,

My dear Friend,

yEfterday I received your Letter, and am much obliged to you for it. Pray don't mention Mr.

's Name, nor fhew his Letter. I hope to adhere to the Truths of the Gospel; but yet I would endeavour to live in Harmony, of Affection and friendly Intercourse at least, with those who differ.-I cannot think, that Mr.

could

have any Knowledge of the Author of the Difcourse against Marks and Evidences.—I will read your Treatife over again, with my best Attention. For, I affure you, it always does me good. I will also compare it with your Remarks on Mr. which, in my Opinion, are folid and fatisfactory; I am sure they are encouraging and comfortable. When

When Marshall was advertised in our News Paper, the Gentleman that inferted my Recommendation, added this Note to explain one Sentence. -"By uncommon Road, 'tis prefumed, the Recommender means the very evangelical Nature, and remarkably inftructive Method of the Directions laid down by Mr. Marshall (than whom no Man, perhaps, was ever better acquainted with the Human Heart) for the effectual Practice of Holinefs, as likewife fomewhat of Obscurity, which is confeffedly in his 3d and 4th Direction.” I apprehend, the Obfcurity of Chapter 3d and 4th arifes, not from any improper Manner of treating the Subjects, but from the mysterious Nature of the Subjects themselves.-I will write to the Bookfeller to fufpend his Procedure of the Prefs, till he hears farther. But let this haften you, my dear Friend, in communicating what you have to obferve. I fhould be glad to have our common Favourite, as clear and unexceptionable as poffible, &c. &c. +

But was defirous to have you peruse it, and correct it, before it goes to the Prefs. Be fo kind, therefore, as to examine it ftrictly; and wherever you think it should be altered, ufe with it the Freedom of a Friend. The more Rigour, the more Kindness.

I send a Frank, to be the Vehicle of your Obfervations, together with the printed half Sheet.

As foon as I have finished what you mention, it shall be tranfmitted. Though I would fain see one of the Books completely abridged, before any Proposals or Advertisements appear. It is a Matter of great Importance, pray let it be executed with Care and Correctnefs. May the Keeper of Ifrael protect you in your Journeys, and the Light of the World guide you in your Work!

Affair. That you informed me of your Defign, and what I answered. That I defired it might be conducted in a tender and respectful Manner. That the Title fhould be more friendly and benign. That you read what you propofed to fay concerning my mentioning of Marshall; which I obferved was inexpreffive. If you faid any Thing, I thought it should be more weighty and significant. This was all the Concern I had in the Affair.

That it was at your Requeft, but with the real Approbation of my Judgment; for I apprehended, that your Design, when well executed, would be a valuable Present to the World.

This comes by a Gentleman who knows you. Let me hear what Mr. fays about the Affair. And remember to give me a Direction where to write to you. You date from Margaret-Street; but this I fuppofe is not particular enough. I can add no more, left the Bearer should be gone. Only I wish you much Succefs in preaching CHRIST,
